I came across a model 94 30-30 with 20" barrel.Stock has a couple of small dings and very light surface rust under lever and small spot on receiver.Gave $200 for it.Kinda having buyers remorse and wondering if that was a good price.I've seen marlins around here go for about the same with cheap scope.Would like your thoughts. Thanks

ya did fine... if it works and the barrel is decent.

they make decent all around/knock about rifles that do not scream tactical.

No need for remorse- just AMMO!

Buyers remorse!!??
94 carbines in vanilla flavor are going for $500.00 minimum in my area of the planet and they aren't even useful here.
94/22 rimfires are bringing $600.00-$700.00 for mediocre specimens.

Thanks for the input.I found it in a local paper ad.Seller said it was bought 2 yrs ago new but when we met,he was mistaken and told me it was about five yrs ago when he bought it.Claims very few rounds shot and seems to be a nice rifle with a dark colored wood.He did leave a nylon butt stock shell holder with 9 shells on it.Need to take it out tomorrow and shoot.Been about twenty five yrs or more since I owned a 30-30.I bet it'll do a job on beavers.:pTired of falling in holes and tunnels with the tractor around the sides of the ponds and on the dams. Not to mention, replacing a dam is expensive.:cuss:

The first time you shoot the gun with that rough nylon shell holder against your cheek you'll be cussing more than the beavers. Sounds like you have an application that the 94 is tailor-made for though. Congrats !

<<Doc sputters about>>

Darn-it! Now he likes it...just when I was gonna offer him $289.00!!! Well, I saw a "nice" one yesterday for $319.00, guess I'll just have to pay the piper.

Still use a shotgun with federal flight control buckshot out of an 18" barrel for those critters. But some or most are to far away for buckshot.Tried my 223 but does not seem to have a very fast kill.As bad as I dislike beavers and the damage they do,I hate to put one or two pellets in one and have them die slow.No problem with shotgun if up close but looking forward to results of 30-30.The're tougher than I would have thought.

Get a set of dies, a bucket of cast bullets, and have a ball. That'll be the cheapest shooting rifle you'll ever own, and likely the most fun as well.
That price, by the way, was a steal.

I use either 165 grain Oregon Trails Laser Cast, which is quite hard, with added gas checks, for higher velocities at 100 yards. Or 165 grain regular soft cast at 50 yards. Either one is a lot of fun, and the soft cast is cheaper then dirt to shoot. I haven't used either to hunt however.

I use the Lee 160 grain bullet, with a gas check in both .30-30 and .30-06. I cast mine out of wheel weights and drop them straight from the mould into a bucket of water, and they shoot very well.

A couple of tips -- you don't need to resize when shooting cast bullets, although you do need the Lee Factory Crimp on .30-30s if you feed them through the magazine.

Lee Liquid Alox is a good lube for just about anything, and a lot cheaper since you don't need a lubricator.

Hey Vern have you tried Rooster Jacket?

I have been using it for my pistol bullets. I have only used it on some tumble lube 32 mag loads so far. I really like this stuff. I dries faster than alox. No leading problems either. I think it might be the same stuff Hornaday uses on their lead bullets.

You did fine on the lever gun. The prices of all Winchesters have taken a big jump with the shutdown of the New Haven plant. Seems somewhat crazy with the number of some of the models out there but at your price you still did fine even if the Winchester prices calm down at some point.
I agree that the 30-30 is a fine cast bullet gun. My advise is go with either cast or jacket but don't mix them. Clean heavy with a good strong copper solvent before shooting lead and don't shoot jacketed in a lead fouled barrel . Mixing bullet types will layer lead and copper in the bore and this becomes a stinker to clean.
My eyes are 54 so I went with peep sights on all my Lever guns and I believe this to be the hot set up. Stocks on the lever guns are shaped all wrong for scopes

Hi Y'All...

It's startng to sound like what I really need to do is locate a good source for bullets that are already cast. Ideally they would be good for deer hunting with a Contender pistol OR a lever rifle - pointed bullets will be fine as I can always load just one in the rifle tube and one in the chamber.

So do any of you lads who know about cast bullets know of any commercially cast 30/30 bullets and suppliers you recommend ?

Many thanks !

I agree.... I only shoot the cast in my Winchester. And I also use the peep sight on it. Which works very well. They are just too ugly when scoped on the side. IMHO.
If I want to hunt with a 30-30 I use the scoped Marlin with the jacketed bullets.
