If your on the fence about buying one , you better make your move .

The tooling is almost worn out . They will not retool . The only 2005 models made will be higher priced collector models . Then no more .

I wonder where you heard that. The 9422 and 9417 have been selling pretty well, and are either the best or second best lever action .22 made (the other is the Marlin 39).

Jim

Winchester uses nearly new computer numerically controlled machinery on all production lines now so I highly doubt the tooling is all worn out.

Winchester is considering or planning to discontinue the 9410 .410 bore lever action shotgun and you may be confusing this gun with the 9422.

I wish they made the 9422 and 9422M with a side loading gate.

How perceptive .

You're right . I'm making it up .

Wildalaska The 9422 is not being discontinued

Has your Browning / Winchester rep been to your store with the 2005 catalogs and direct dealer programs ?
Annual factory sales meetings were held the week of 18th - 22nd . Reps visited their larger accounts last week .

That would be a big stink if the discontinued the 94/22:( I still have to pick up a 94/17;)

Our rep visits us once a week, if not more.:neener:

9422s will be available next year

I don't think I said that they wouldn't be available . Any guns still in the distributor pipeline made in 2004 will be available .
Also , the 2005 "Final Tribute" rifles will be available . 9,422 in the "Tribute Series " and 222 in the " Custom Edition " .

Gary Stevens , President of Skyline Sales , Bowning / Winchester reps for Alaska , knows about the discontinuance of the 9422 . Wonder why his rep that calls on you weekly didn't fill you in ??? I would think that a General Manager like yourself would be the first to know ?

I did report incorrectly about the " worn out " tooling . The catalog states that " The tooling is being retired , and the production line at the New Haven , CT facility will stop " . 2005 catalog page 21 . Sorry for that misleading statement .

Our rep visits us once a week, if not more.

I feel your pain . I have no time to visit with the same rep once a week .

Just like Belgian guns went to Japan, me thinks the 9422 may be making the same journey.
Then again those cheapo Henry rifles may have killed the sales potential.
Too bad Winchester won't just cut the price and sell the 9422 as a loss leader.
Oh well.

The Japanese definately aren't making guns any cheaper than we are . Check Browning prices .

I think your Henry comparison is more on the mark . We've sold many more Golden Boys than 9422's in the last year .

Winchester Says Good-Bye To The 9422

January 1, 2005
MORGAN, UTAH— Since 1972, Winchester® has built one of the most famous and best loved rimfires on the market: the Model 9422. More than just a rimfire rifle, it is a foundation for learning accuracy, safety and building good memories. Model 9422s are appreciated by firearms aficionados and first-time buyers alike. The smooth, fluid action, special target crowns for improved accuracy and excellent fit and finish were all the evidence necessary to show that they were built to higher standards than other rimfires. Now, after 33 years, production of the time- honored Model 9422 is ending. The tooling is being retired, and the production line at the New Haven, Connecticut facility will stop. Never again will you have the opportunity to purchase rifles like these final production 9422s. In a well-deserved final applause, a special, limited edition run of only 9,422 will be produced in a Tribute Series, and 222 in the Custom Edition. Do not delay in selecting your rifle, you won’t get a second chance.

As a final tribute, Winchester will offer five models.

:(

What I've heard is that the Henrys are eating into their market. I've looked at a number of the Henrys and while they certainly cost less than the Winchester, IMHO they aren't in the same league in terms of fit and finish. I wonder if the 9417 has anything to do with it as well. In any event it's too bad they are halting production on my favorite little rifle. :(

with price range of 500-1000 it's no wonder they're discontinuing it!

Unless I'm confussed and that's the Special Edition prices. And even then, it's a friggin .22! $1000?

According to some old book I'm looking at, forty years ago a Marlin 39-A listed for $84.95. Now a fine .22 costs more, although it's really still just a week or two's pay. The cut checkering and deep bluing sounds good to me, but I'm not too sure about the other stuff. Nice guns do shoot better. :) The last .22 I bought, a Cooper, cost $1600. I shot enough cheap .22s when I was a kid. That was back in the days when the tv only got 3 channels.

Kamicosmos, those are the prices for the last 9,644 rifles that will be made (9,422 Tribute Series and 222 Custom Editions.) A regular old 9422 Traditional typically goes for around $350-$400.

I called the local dealer I buy from the most and he quoted me prices between $800 and $1000 for the various grades of these special versions. I don't know how that jibes with the prices listed in the Winchester press release. Dealer markup??? I'd spring for one in the $500 range. As much as I love Winchester leverguns $800-$1000 is too rich for my blood for a .22. My next .22 is going to be the new CZ 452FS. I love that Mannlicher stock.

Maybe three years ago, a Winchester Model 63 (.22 semi-auto) was selling for around $800. Winchester discontinued it, sold the design to Taurus, and Taurus is now selling the same rifle -- with the Taurus bolt lock -- for around $300. I wonder if Taurus will buy the rights to produce the 9422. They'd be nuts not to.
