Saw one the other day at walmart. Was only $30 and you usually get what you pay for but are they any good? Me and my dad wanted to start shooting shotguns more so I was going to get a thrower and some clays with my next paycheck. Is it decent or is there something else fairly cheap?

I'd be a little leery, it's going to be a cheap Chinese knockoff.
A hand trap has to be well made to hold up, but it's cheap enough.
Maybe it'll last long enough to get your moneys worth.

Are you talking about this one?

My experience with any of the small & light mechanical throwers is, they are a lot of work.

A great deal of effort is required to cock them each time.
And they want to come unstuck from the ground every time you throw a target.

I generally gravitate to a hand thrower and leave the mechanicals to a real one at a skeet range that costs several grand and is cocked by a motor.

This works well if you have a friend to throw for you.

Don't know nuttin' 'bout shooting clays, but thought you might be interested in last week's Guns and Gear segment on Fun With Sporting Clays?
I noticed the hand thrower he was using.

Yeah I think that was it although i didn't look at it alot. They had the hand ones for only a couple bucks but we were thinking a mechanical would be easier on us. I'm sure I could cock one fairly easy and if it was pulling out of the ground I could probably weld it to some kind of heavy metal. What are good ones for fairly cheap? I'll be looking around at a couple more stores to see what all they have before I buy anything.

The last one I had was welded to an old tractor wheel weight.

I'm here to tell you I could be out to the range, shoot a box of clays with a hand thrower, and be back home while I was loading and unloading the mechanical with the 100 pound wheel weight added in my truck.

If you have a place to shoot where you can leave it in place, I suppose it would work out better.

We are using 3 of these at our club. Being mount up at waist level makes cocking and loading very fast...and they recock 75% themselves, it is a very short reset for the guy loading it. We have no problem throw a clay every 2-3 seconds with these once you get used to them. Throws hard and fast (will throw a singe about 100 yards) and stays in place if you set the post well.

http://www.traphappens.com/product/DAO-PM134 you can find them much cheaper than at the link i posted but it is the best pic i could find...expect to pay 80-85...
