If you recognize my user name, then you know I usually post in the Handguns sections. There's a reason for that: my knowledge base on handguns is large, while my knowledge base concerning long guns is... well, smaller. So bear with me.

Last summer or so, I made a pawnshop buy of a Winchester Defender 1300 12-guage. It has a barrel longer than the Mossberg defender I used to have (18" on the 500, I think) and shorter than that of my Dad's Remington 1100. Maybe 23" give or take, with a ventilated rib on top. It's rated for up to 3" shells (according to the markings on the barrel) but I haven't shot it yet. I haven't even taken it apart, yet. (Mea culpa, my bad, I know, no lectures...) But I have done numerous cycle function checks using the action release button right behind the trigger.

Magazine capacity is 5 using 2 1/2" shells. And it has swivels for a sling.

Here come the questions:

* Can anyone out there send me Winchester's CS email address? I want to order a manual for it, and my computer here at work is blocked from such sites, and home computer is down. Failing that, a phone number?

* Does anyone know of a magazine extension tube for these things? I'd like a few more rounds...

* What were these things designed for, anyway? Home defense? (Kinda long for that...) Hunting (Kinda short...) Police work?

my favorite shotgun

I've got the 1300 defender and I love it! here's some answers for your questions

heres a phone # couldn't find e-mail 800.333.3288 or 801.876.2711 & for Parts & Service call: 800.322.4626

heres a mag tube extension, not sure if it's the best price it's just the first one I found http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/magazine_extensions.htm

and I believe, my short barreled defender was for home defense, not sure what a longer barrel would be for, I'll bet you could get the shorter barrel if you wanted

also I'd look into aguila ammunition's mini shells, they're 1.75" shells and the winchester defender is the only shotgun that can shoot them without modification In my shotgun I believe I can fit 12 or 13 shells, anyway it's alot and even if not for HD they're still alot of fun to shoot, enjoy the new shotgun!

I have a 1300 Defender that was made for Security. It had a 24 and 1/8th cyl bore barrel, and held 6 3" shells in the mag tube. These came 2 in a box and were to be sold to prisons etc. I had the barrel cut to 20" and threaded for Remchoke tubes since I had a bunch of them. Great shotgun, I've used it for IDPA and it has been very reliable. I'm not sure if this will answer any of your questions as to the extra length of your barrel, but I hope so.
I've attached the tag that come with it that notes the specifications.

Are you sure you have a 1300 "Defender"? Because I'm pretty sure that the 1300 Defender model comes with an 18" barrel, no rib and a 7 shot tube (6 shot if you load 3" shells). At least mine does. IRC there used to be a 1300 "Camp Defender" model, maybe that's what you have. Anyway the manual for 1300's is the same for all subvariants.

PS: you can get almost any manual from this page http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/

Yup, my 1300 has an 18" barrel. If the mag tube was any longer it would extend beyond the end of the barrel. It'll take 10 of the Aguilla mini slugs up the tube. If you need more fire power than that, you'll need a Street Sweeper. Actually, I wish the barrel was about 12", it seems a little long with the ATI stock. Here's a pic for positive ID.

Thank You All

Thank you for the excellent responses. To clear up some confusion:

NO, this is not a "Defender." Don't know where I got that idea. It's a 1300 Ranger, as is clearly obvious from the close up picture below.

I measured the barrel at 24".

I also finally fixed my internet at home and downloaded the manual right from Winchester. Found the extended mag tubes, which is nice.

I guess it's time to shoot this thing, eh?
