I have a Winchester Carbine S/N 6,553,XXX. It is 2nd to last production block and is correct. Wear matches. No import mark. Am pretty sure it is original

The other day I noticed that the bottom front of the trigger guard is slightly rounded to the rear as if it was to be put into a rack of some sort.

Check out the pictures. The “J” on the bottom of the trigger housing was a production code of varying numbers or letters and unique to Winchester. The second pic shows it best.

I have seen this where the front of the trigger guard has been filed to fit in a vehicle gun rack or lock. It was primarily on civilian police shotguns like Stevens or High Standard.

Comments and information is appreciated

Thanks,

Jim, BEDFORDTEC

To me it just appears to have a rough, wartime finish. I’m not really seeing any differences or after issue wear or grinding/filing, just get this thing out of the factory as fast as possible.
Winchester is known for having the worst finishes on M1 rifles, I don’t see why they would go out of their way to make M1 carbines pretty.

The transverse scratches look too irregular to be machining marks. They look to me like evidence of sloppy hand filing, which was done after the carbine left the factory. Why it was done is another question.

I have two Winchesters. I know they arent all "Winchester", so I cant swear that the trigger groups are, but these are what are in my guns.

Judging by the depth of the hole on the flat, and the distance between the bottom of the mag release and the flat, it looks like yours is different and may have been modified.
