Winchester M'94 crossbolt safety

A few years ago I came upon a M94 Limited Edition Centennial rifle in .30WCF that has outstanding figured wood, but unfortunately has a darn crossbolt safety that mars an otherwise beautiful rifle.

Would any of you folks know of a gunsmith who would remove the crossbolt and somehow cover the large indent?

That would probably cost more than it's worth. You can disable the unneeded crossbolt safety by simply putting a neoprene O-ring in the detent groove.

This isn't one of the many special editions that involved taking a standard production gun and putting some fancy tacks in the stock...they are particiularly nice rifles and would definately be worth it to remove and hide the crossbolt.

There must be someone, somewhere who's figured out how to do it!

Unfortunately, in today's environment, there aren't many smiths in the business who want to be potentially responsible for removing or disabling a factory safety device. You might search the web for ideas that you can do yourself or parts you can install yourself (for example, to disguise the hole as a screw hole).

Maybe we ought to remember that this is a post-'64 Model 94. The receivers of these rifles are difficult if not impossible for the average smith to reblue, and I suspect welding up the depression would be close to impossible -- and highly expen$ive if you could find someone to do it.

And in the process, you'd destroy whatever collector's value the rifle has for the future.
