Winchester Model 100

You don't see much about these any more but they really are getting to be a collector if they are a pre 64. Essentially they are just like the 88 in fit and form, but the 88 is a lever and the 100 is semi auto. They've gotten kind of a bad rap for reliability, but really the trick is to clean the gas system. You also have to get the new firing pin put in. Years of R&D went into them by the folks at Winchester. To me anything made pre 64 by Winchester is good. Like those old model 63 semi auto 22's. They sure don't make em like that any more. I am thinking about getting another 100, here is an example of what I am talking about: Lets here about your any nice 100's out there.

I've got a pre-64 that was my grandfathers go to gun for countless Minnesota deer seasons. It's got an old Weaver 1-4 or 1.5-4.5 on it with some Marbles Game Getter see through mounts (about the only see through mounts worth a damn in my opinion)

It's as accurate as any other gun I have even despite it's awful trigger.

I've had it for 4-5 years, but have not taken it hunting yet as I hardly ever go deer hunting with a rifle any more.

My dad has a matching rifle set up the same and neither one of them has ever had a problem.

model 100

I had a Browning lever in .358 Win and was in a hardware store in a small town in Wisconsin nosing around and discoved a box of win .358 in the old yellow and blue box. I know there were very few 88's and 100's chambered in this cal. and inquired of the old gent that ran the store where he acquired this, and he brought out a magazine with .358 Win. stamped on it. He forgot where the gun was, but he used to buy from anyone that brought guns into his place. After he sold out, I heard the guy that bought the store found three old win. levers in the attic. I'll have to check that out sometime.

There were never any factory Model 100's chambered in .358. I always thought it would have been a good idea, though.

I wasn't aware of any 100's in that caliber. 284's are the most sought after then the pre 64 .243, then the 308's.

I was reading an old article where a fellow made the 270 wsm feed in a Winchester model 88 now thats interesting

The first time I became aware of these was looking through my dads NRA guide to disassembling rifles, and there it was. I thought it looked pretty cool. You know if you look through one of those books, there are alot models that are out there, a person might not even know about.
Also any of you 100 masters out there: Is the carbine more reliable than the regular 100?

I like the model 88's too but they are getting hard to come by.

I used to hunt with a model 100 carbine in 308. I foolishly traded that little gem.

I love em, and coulda got one allready with the recall parts, for 300, but I wasn't interested in 308 cal. shoulda got it anyway. but deff get one, if it has the recall done on it allready...
