Winchester Model 12 questions....

That is an amazing story! He found a gun while out walking???? Wish I could find guns while I was just out walking around!

i found out his Model 12 is from 1924. His dad grew up on a farm and was walking a cow to the neighbors farm with his dad when they seen it leaning up against a fence in the middle of nowhere and no one was around. His dad told him if it was still there when they came back he could take it home. My husband and I didn't know the story behind it until Christmas day.

We would be interested in trying to locate a stock for it still. If anyone might have an idea of where to look I would appreciate any help.

Winchester Model 12 Gun Parts

You can also go to:
http://www.winchesterguns.com/services/obsolete.asp

They have several links to find parts for your Winchester.

As for my Arkansas find. Went out and shot six rounds of skeet, it did very well except for the Winchester "white box" of shells. Did not like them at all and had to force it to spit them out. From now on AA black box is the only way to go.

It has the deluxe poly choke on it and a recoil pad but the recoil is more like a 28 ga. We removed the recoil pad and found eight ounces of lead in the stock. Back before the days of mercury installation. Makes it very nice to shoot in skeet without the next day stiffness.

I am curious if anyone knows. I had a 1300XTR and became used to the forearm, I was trying to find out if I could replace the wood on the model 12, I know they are hard to find, wondered about dimensions and could go from there.

ONE LAST NOTE TO MENTION:

Melgriff, I would strongly suggest that since not knowing it's history or working order. Have a gunsmith thoroughly check it out and use a 50-foot piece of kite string to pull the trigger for the first five shells.

Model 12s

I am in central Texas and have two Wincheter Model 12 I am wanting to sell but know nothing about them except were handed down to me from my dad. I do remeber that over 20 years ago he go offered $800 for the 20 ga.

1 - 12 - 12 ga, Nickel steel, Full, # 538583
1 - 12 - 20 ga, 2 /34 chamber, Winchester Proof Steel, Mod, # 2703223

From the forum it referrences page http://oldguns.net/sn_php/windateslookup.php?file=win1912.dat to get a manufature date. The page shows Winchester Model 1912; Covering numbers: 1 - 2023672. The 20 ga number is higher? I went to the other lookup page and there is no model 12? Is the 1912 the same as the model 12?
I'm so confused! Any info would be helpful.

Model 12s

I emailed the pre-referenced oldguns.net and John Spangler gave me a prompt reply, 'Winchester changed the name from 1912 to Model 12 around 1918. The 20 ga and 12 ga Model 12 guns were numbered in the same series. We only included the numbers for which we had data. You can probably find later guns on another source.'
The 12 ga. was made in 1928 and the 20 ga. is post 1976.

I am still looking for any info on where to reseach and find out what they are worth and or where to sell them. You can also email me at [email protected].

12s

Quote: Is the later model a revived production?
All I know is what I have l shown. I know mine is a Winchester 12-20 and is pretty much identical to the older 12 ga.

Winchester made the model 12 on a limited basis into the 1970s.

There were engineering revisions to reduce production cost with the end result all the parts were still interchangeable with the original model 12s.

You should see the letter "Y" preceding the serial number (2,000,000 and above) for the 1970s production guns. They are known as Y series guns. They have upgraded wood, engine turned bolts and carriers and vent ribs. They are very good guns.

I was at a gun show in Cody, Wyoming, in June of this year. We were there for the Wyoming State SASS Championships, and there was a gun show the same weekend. A gentleman was walking around the show with a really nice condition Model 12 in 20 gauge. I asked him if he wanted to sell it and he said I first needed to look at it. He turned it so I could see the serial number, and it was Number 2! He had taken it to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and they verified it.

I saw him later at the motel and he told me he had turned down $20,000.00 for it, but only because the prospective buyer wanted to pay him $10,000.00 in cash, and write a check for the remaining $10,000.00. He said he wasn't about to take a check from a stranger.

My shooting partner was with me and we just shook our heads. You can bet I would have figured out a way to consumate that deal, if it had been me. Our wives couldn't understand somebody turning down $20,000.00 for an "old gun", but when we explained it to them, they understood.

The gentleman said he lived in Idaho, and was there for the Winchester Collector's gun show. He said he might list it on Gun Broker, but I never checked when we got back home to see if he did.

I am a new model 12 owner and have questions about loading- my other pump guns automatically hold the shells in the magazine tube when inserted. Is the model 12 any different- I note that when I load magazine tube, shells protrude into chamber and are held by the silver lever on the bottom of the magazine. Is this normal? Do model 12's load /operate any differently? Thanks for your reply

Gun Worth / Appraisal

How does one go about getting a guns worth or an accurate appraisal?
I have 2 model 12s I wanna sell but don't want to give them away. I am in central Texas. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, JLP

With a SN in the 2.7 million range and no "Y" I would guess the one Model 12 is a reintroduction by Browning using the Winchester name.

To get an idea of value check out Ebang.com. This site grabs data from three or more auction sites. Try to find similar guns to yours. I find the pricing in auction sites 20%-25% higher than realistic prices.

Another alternative is to visit gun shows. You can cruise the isles and look at Model 12s in similar shape to yours and get an idea of asking prices. Most prices will come down 10% or sometimes more when bargaining, so keep that in mind.

Wow! This forum spans along time.

leetuser, if you are still around. Your gun was made in 1918. That was the year Winchester changed the name from Model 1912 to Model 12.

Your choke system is not factory. Winchester never installed weaver choke systems. They did have some Poly Chokes put on guns but this was many years later. You will find many guns with Poly Chokes, Cutts Compensators and other types of chokes that were put on as after market items by the owners. If you look on the rear of the barrel you will probably see the original choke markings stamped. Most likely it will read FULL or Mod.
