Help me men. I have a Winchester Model 12 my Dad gave me that was Grandpa's. How do I get the action bar to release from the bolt carrier so I can slide it all the way forward to twist the barrel and magazine off?

ATAShooter Many thanks! I am sending this to my son. He inherited my Father's model 12 and I know he will appreciate this. :)

I know, I cheated.... I used to take the time to type it all in. I decided to scan the owner's manual to save my fingers, Plus it had pics too. Pics are worth a million words sometimes. Ya'll are welcome. :D

Here's an NRA magazine article with a schematic.

ATA, tried your advice over the weekend and it was amazing how slick it came apart once I knew how! Thanks, JDM

Is that all there is??

Hello all,
New forum member here,

ATAShooter quick question please: Is that all there is to the take down guide and owners manual for the Winchester Model 12, just those 2 pages??

JohnBT that link to NRA schematic no longer works, just goes to new web site where they do not seem to have the article in the archives anymore!
Any chance you have a copy of it on your 'puter??

Thanks a lot!!

Sincerely,
Tom

More help?

I too have inherited a Winchester Model 12 from my great Grandfather. I don't have the best working knowledge of these old guns so forgive me in advance. When I assemble the gun, what position should the bolt be in? When I try to assemble it, the action wont fully engage. It seems as if there is something stopping it from sliding all the way down...and the bolt (correct term?) is open the entire time. Not sure if I am explaining this well...sorry.

Thanks for any help!

One more question

Also...what would you use to clean the parts? I would like to clean it with the hopes of shooting it.

Thanks!

When you take the Model 12 down, the bolt should be closed.

As for cleaning, I like Gun Scrubber, mineral spirits, Hoppes #9, and Shooters Choice for my bore.

Welcome to the forum, and we'd love to see pics of your "new" model 12!

Details

The Winchester Model-12 must have the bolt closed by the action slide before the slide bar can be slid out the front of the frame for takedown.
If the bolt was not closed by the slide, then there is a serious breakage, and I do mean serious.
Most likely, the bolt failed to stay closed because the "bolt retaining lever" has jarred free, is loosely-fit, or the combination of some wear of it and the retaining notch it uses in the frame.
This wear condition is not always a problem to fix, but the longer the situation repeats, the worse it may get.
If the bolt has jarred/slipped loose and gone somewhat to the rear, instead of being in the normal closed position, the frame may be hit face down against a padded surface to inertially drive the bolt to the front of the frame, and then you can manipulate the tail of the bolt up into the locking notch by pushing up on the carrier and using it to push the back end of the bolt up.
That is the position necessary for the slide to be able to engage the bolt and operate the gun.
Now what do you do?
Since the bolt will try to drop back down until the slide is inserted fully into place, have the barrel assembly on the frame but without the slide handle pulled back into position, but have everything else in line so you can pull the slide into position while you push the back end of the bolt back into the frame locking notch.
Finish the assembly.
Remember to have the parts fixed to allow normal takedown and assembly that a Model-12 should provide for years to come.

Is that helpful?

Any idea where I can get an online version of the original disassembly manual/instructions?
