Does the beast exist? Was it made only for special order or were full production runs made? What does it cost? I have scoured the internet looking for one but have come up empty. I don't want a .405 or a special edition, custom grade, high grade, deluxe grade, et cetera. I just want a shooters grade, I want to use it, and will likely shorten the barrel to make it easier to carry in the brush. If I can find one, and at a decent price it will be really close to my dream-gun for hunting.

As far as I know, the Winchester lever action 1895 rifles (box magazine) , were not chambered in 45-70.

They were chambered in:

30-40 Krag (marked 30 US ARMY)
303 British
30-03
30-06
7.62 Russian rimmed (the most made were actually for the Czar)
35 Winchester (a real thumper)
38-72, (black powder)
40-72 (black powder)
405 Winchester, (A super Thumper)

And of course the new semi-clones came in 270, 30-06, 30-40 krag and 405 Winchester.

If you want a 45-70 lever gun, you will have to buy a 1886 Winchester, a new 86 Winchester clone , or a Marlin 1895. (Note... The new Marlin 1895s are really just an beefed up modle 336. The original marlin 1895s in 45-70 looked like their 1894 lever guns except slightly larger.

Check out the Marlin 1895G.
It's a robust .45-70 ... mine is pictured
between a MK14 SEI and a T56SHTF

Darn, a while back someone was selling a "Win. 1895 45-70 deluxe grade" or some such. I thought they were mistaken but never got a response saying so. Oh well, I guess I will just have to buy that other box magazine lever action 45-70. :(

I have an it is likely what I will end up with (the slr version if it is ever released) but I like a box magazine. :(

Thanks for the replies. :)

Might have been an 1886.
Might have been an 1885 single shot, which would call for only a single digit typo.
Could have been either or a Marlin 1895 in 45-70...that's what I think it was...but no pics or response so it's hard to tell. It could have been the one and only, but I doubt it.

I saw a Teddy Roosevelt commemorative Winchester 1895 in 405Win a while back. If I had a credit card I would probably have bought it (which is why I don't have one).

Yeah, that really sparked my interest. I'm not a big fan of the .405 though. I want a .458 chunk-o-lead. A 45-70 would be great, a .458WM (downloaded for deer) would be even better.

If you want something a little different but still in the 458 range, the 450 Marlin might be fun.

You can get that caliber chambered in a Marlin lever gun OR a box magazined Browning BLR. Please note that the lightweight BLR in 450 Marlin kicks like a mule.

The 450 Marlin is basically a shortened 458 Winchester brass with the magnum belt moved a little bit to keep you from chmabering it into a 300 Win Mag.

The idea is not new, at one time there was a fairly popular cartridge called the 458 x 2 inch American. It was just a 458 Win Mag cut to a 2 inch brass length. The 450 Marlin is the same thing with the belt move a little bit forward.

Some guys up here are re-barreling bolt actions to the 450 Marlin. It has ballistics like a top end hot-load for a 45-70 in a modern action.

That is an option, wonder if I can open it up to accept a .458WM or a .458Lott. Probably not due to the pressure, but I believe the 450 is a lot higher pressure than a 45-70, so worth checking into.

Awww, it ain't that bad...I love shooting my 45-70 falling block, and didn't mind a buddies .458WM bolt gun.

Just found out that they actually (at one time or another) made the Browning in .458WM, so I imagine that I could have it opened up to accept the .458Lott. While I don't like it as much as the 1895, this may the best option for me.

An 1895 in 7.62x54 Russian is one rifle I plan to buy some day. Just too cool to not own one.

I agree or one in 303 British, and make it in musket style and with carbine length. OH Shoot, they should make it in several different styles. And if they make a musket style make it look like a Russian contract gun with baynet lug on it if for no other reason than to tick off the liberals in Washington. They should also put in it full production too. Forget this limited run junk.

450 Alaskan is what I would go for in a lever action if I wanted to really feel it.
I really want to feel it...so I just found out that my drug dealer (under the guise of being a gun shop owner :D) has a Browning BLR in .458WM on his "not for sale" wall, it is for sale just that he doesn't push to sell those guns. I haven't even spoken to him about the price, but I am confident that it isn't going anywhere fast and he will give me a fair deal if I decide to pick it up. If I do I plan to bore it out to accept a .458 Lott and download for NA game like deer. You can always go down...but you can only go so far up.:)

Dang, I was all excited and everything...call me out if I am wrong, but it appears that they never made a .458WM. So it could be a one-off custom, but I doubt it...looks like it is a .358. I shoulda' took it off the wall for a closer inspection. Wasn't my dream-gun but they haven't built that yet. ;)

Maverick,
I don't know if they make a Winchester model 1895 in a 45-70 but Marlin does. They look somewhat similar to each other. Maybe you'll like the Marlin just as much.

On top of pressure issues (450 43,500 psi - 458 53,000 cup)I suspect you will run into issues with cartridge length if you try to convert a short actioned BLR to 458 Win, much less 458 Lott. You might get one to fit a long action BLR. There's no way a 458 will feed in a Marlin.

A 450 Marlin will do nicely for anything on this continent.

Not made...but I will probably end up getting a new model 1895 that is chambered in .30-06. As far as the Marlin, it isn't really all that close, but the new SBL model handles very well, so I will likely pick one up. A little old but thanks for posting. :)

I have since dropped the idea due tot he obvious flaws in the conversion, whilst the 450 may be based upon the .458WM it is nothing like it. I may end up getting a BLR (chambered in .30-06 but only if I can't acquire a 1895 in the same chambering). The BLR has a couple of added "features" that I don't care for. Most notably the extraction problems due to the reduced leverage of the design. :)

I have decided to wait on the .458Lott, but will pick one up if I stumble upon a good deal (unlikely in this area).
