Looking at a Winchester Model 50, The - it has a Polychoke which I'm not all too excited about. Could that be lopped off the barrel and the barrel be threaded to accept a modern thread in choke tube such as Browning's Invector or Invector + choke tubes which I belive is what's in the new Winchester shotguns? Thanks. Also what's a general estimation of the cost of such a trip to the gunsmith's?

Maybe, but unless the price is Very attractive?

While the Model 50 is of interest to Winchester collectors, it is an obsolete shotgun, with no parts and very few high priced replacement barrels still available.
It was Winchesters third attempt to make an auto-loading shotgun that actually worked.
It used a Williams Floating Chamber to make it operate.
Made from 1954 to 1961, with a total sales of about 200,000 guns.

I'd look for something more modern & steel shot compatable if I were you.

I have one (actually it is a hybrid between the model 59 and model 50) and have had it for over 50 years.

It is a simple, solid dependable, well built shotgun. Not steel shot compatible and parts are basically impossible to find in worthy condition. As rc mentioned it was the third attempt by Winchester to make a suitable auto shotgun, the first two attempts were abject failures.

I love my gun and wouldn't trade it for anything but unless your find is in fine shape and a heck of a deal (less than $300.00) I would follow rc's advice and get something more modern.

A pic of my hybrid (model 50 receiver, model 59 everything else):

I have one and it's a bit heavy for 3 shots but very mild recoil so... Gander mountain shold be able to do the work (check their site) if I was buying one I wouldn't pay more than $350.

At a gun show there was a Model 50 and 59 for sale for $500 for the two. The 50 is heavy. I already own a 59 and have been shooting it for a decade or more. It is nearly new. So were the two guns I saw for sale.

I bought from Numrich a modified barrel for the 59, so I have a Full and Mod. I saw an IC for sale for $200, don't need it that bad.

I use my 59 when I'm chukar hunting since it is so light. It is rather "whippy". However I've carried the gun for some time now. The problem with chukar hunting is that you can trip on one of those nasty rocky hillsides and drop your gun. So I don't carry a really fine shotgun.

However the 59 is a pretty nice shotgun. If you pick one up and then hoist a Model 50 the 50 feels heavy as lead.
