My grandfather recently gave me his Winchester Model 1962A. His favorite activity as a young man in the late 40's and 50's was to use it to shoot rats at the local dump. Anyways, at some point he removed the original iron sights and placed a scope on the gun... Where the original iron sights have gone, no one knows. I'd like to get replacement iron sights for the gun. Does anyone know of a good supplier or source of replacement front and rear sights for this rifle? Thanks so much!

As Art said, a lot depends upon whether the dovetails are of the US "standard" 3/8" nominal size. If they are (easily determined with a calipher) then the number of your possible options is pretty sizable. Some fitting on the sights' bases to match the included angle of the cuts may well be necessary, but that's easily accomplished.

Marbles, Williams and a number of others make replacement/upgrade open rear models and bead/blade front sights of many heights, widths and configurations. IIWY, I'd avail myself of the "tech questions" service phone number(s) at Brownell's, Williams, etc. for help and/or advice on what front height might be best. There are formulae out there for calculating the approximate figure, but most require having a measured sight radius figure and the amount of deviation from POA at a known range to plug-in, which would be difficult for you to determine since your rifle has had its original sights removed. It's entirely possible that these folks will have data at hand on what combos have been proven to work on the Winchester 62A. Worth a phone call to find out, IMHO.

cjbs2003, You have a great piece of Winchester history. I had one back in the forties. Kept it for over 40 years and in a weak moment let it go. One of the dummest things I ever did with a gun. I also used to go to the city dump and shoot rats. A great firearm for anyone. valleymax

Winchester 62A

I need some advice. Have a post war standard Winchester 62A. Good to very good condition. There are so many variations to these things, I don't know where to go, or how to go about it for that matter, to get an honest appraisal or evaluation on it.
