I inherited a model 70 in 30-06 from my dad and would like to determine year of manufacture. Unfortunately the barrel is shot-out, and needs replacement. But before I proceed, I would like to Identify the year of manufacture?
On the barrel is the following markings: Winchester proof steel. Made in New Haven Conn. US of America. Winchester Trade Mark. Model-70-30Gov'T'06-. No s/n is found on barrel except the numbers: 1906 and 49- on the underside near to the thread. s/n on the action is 138281.
Can someone help?
I also recenly saw another Winchester Model 70, stamped: Winchester proof steel. Made in New Haven Conn. US of America. Winchester Trade Mark. Winchester Model-70-30-06 SPFTD. s/n on action is 395 336. Except for manufacturing year, why the difference in the barrel stamping when it come to caliber?
