I see Skinner has an offering but they seem to be more "set it and forget it" type peeps. How's the build quality on these?

Then there's the Lyman 48 and Redfield 80. I've heard these things are great. Any input on either would be appreciated.

Am I missing any others that will pair up without any inlaying or modifications?

I've always wanted to try peep/aperture sights on my Winchester Model 70. I try to shoot open sights as much as possible while my eyes are still good.

Also if anyone here has some peep/aperture sights they're not using that will mount up to a Model 70, PM me with an offer. Thanks!

Hi there. Peep sights are a very good choice for fast shooting and depending on your eye sight, can be be very effective at longer ranges. I enjoy the nice field of view afforded by them. I have come to be a very big fan of Williams brand. Their FP line is really nice and can be had with target knobs. They are well built and are easy to mount and use. Some of their sets come with Fire Sights. That equates to a new front sight with a fiberoptic tube. If you are accustomed to using Peep sights you will like the fast front sight acquasition these provide. All the other brands you mentioned are good choices as well. My personal pick is williams. You don't have to change the front sight as long as your POA and POI are correct. However if you need a taller front sight that fire sight is a fine choice or a nice partridge front with a vertical white line works nice too.
I don't know your whole story here so I'll just add that it has been my experience out to 100yds I can equal scope accuracy. At about 150 -200yds I loose a little depending on size of target. At 300yds I would take the shot on deer size game and feel confident but would rather have a scope. Just my 2cents worth. Good luck!
Happy shooting!

For many generations of hunters and target shooters The Lyman 48 was the "go to" receiver sight. Redfield, Marbles and others made excellent "peep" sights for Winchesters and other makes, and Lyman also offered different models of sights for most rifles,l but their 48 was the standard. They came with finger-easy to knobs or smoother hunter knobs. After WWII Redfield became more dominate in target shooting circle with their Olympic, International and PALMA series. Which, like the Lykan 48, are no longer made but easy to find on ebay and similar sources. For target shooting, there are newer and better receiver sights currently made, such as the Warner sight mounted on this M-70 long range target rifle. And a Lyman 48 from the 1930's on this pre-WWII M-70, a classic combination. 21A_3963 (2).JPG 21A_3969 (2).JPG .

One on ebay now. They have them on a site called pre64win.com but for $369! Ill look into the Marbles, I didnt know they had one for the M70. I also see Lyman has a 57 that fits but is aluminum. Supposedly still in production.

Thanks

Skinner sights replace the rear sight on some rifles like the 94 Winchester. It would be usable in a scabbard. They make the same sight for bolt actions. My buddy got them installed on a siamese mauser. They were easy to adjust. You may have to file off the peep sight stem a little. But once set they look strong.

I'm I'm not sure a match rear sight would be satisfactory in that environment. Williams made their 5D sight which was a small profile receiver sight without knobs. This type would be better for a hunting type rifle than match sights.
