Hello,
I have a Winchester Model 77 rifle (magazine fed model). I guess I'm seeking confirmation on what this rifle "eats".
Info I had ran across on the internet states that Win 77's should be.22 LR. The barrel reads .22L (lots of spaces) then Rifle.
It's a 1954, serial 8xxx. I do not have a original magazine for it.
I do not have an original Winchester magazine. With a new TripleK magazine it feeds .22L just fine, but .22LR stall at a high angle at the start of the brass (LRN or HP doesn't change the issue).

Did they make a Long only variant? Or is the TripleK mag faulty?

Didn't want to spend $80 for a vintage Winchester Mag to find out that it is indeed a Long not LR, so I figured I would ask around first.

Thanks for your time :)

I would bet you have a faulty mag. Aftermarket mags, especially for older models are hit or miss at best. You can probably tweak it enough to make it work, but keep an eye on the auction sites for an original.

The Model 77 was only made in .22 Long Rifle.

You have a bad mag.
Tripple-K mags very seldom work in anything in my experiance.

A real Winchester mag is your best bet.

You can try bending the feed lips closer together to control the round further into the chamber.
But I'd really suggest you start the hunt for a genuine Model 77 mag.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
It failed to run with a Winchester brand magazine also.
Turns out the magazine is fine (a debatable statement when you compare the quality of it compared to a true Winchester magazine.) ;)

The issue was caused by the fact that the previous owner had installed the disconnector, which sits on the trigger, (between it and the sear) incorrectly. It had been installed rotated 180 degrees, with the notch on the wrong side.
It was not letting the bolt go back all the way without excessive force.

Mine needs a very deep cleaning, I guess. My father never cleaned it really well and I get some jams now that it's mine. In excellent condition, but is hard to disassemble and clean thoroughly. I'm sure this hurt its popularity. And the magazine seat/ trigger guard assembly has warped very slightly and the mag is just a trifle difficult to seat. The trigger guard seems to be some sort of plastic.

Mine does feed CCI ammo better than Remington, which seems dirty. I've quit buying Remington .22 ammo. My Marlin M-795SS feeds it, but it's just plain dirty to shoot. Winchester runs better. But CCI is best.

The Win. M-77 seems very well made. I think you just have a bad magazine or dirty action that may have powder residue under the extractor.

Good luck.
