Hello,
Is 500$ out of line for a post 64 88 in 243(Also has nice ring and bases, with a Bushnell trophy xlt scope). It is in really good shape, but the stock has been cut down to a youth stock. How much would it cost to get a gunsmith to add to the length of pull of this rifle, or should I replace the stock? The stock is what really worries me about the value.

Numerich shows out of stock for those stocks but they run about $120 if you can find one. Boyds might be worth a look as to an aftermarket stock that will need finishing.
My brother snagged a real nice one from my local gun shop for $600 out the door. Had he not bought it I would have and it was a 308 chambering.

Your call. Personally with the cut stock I wouldn't go $500 but would go $600 in a heartbeat for an excellent condition original with the correct stock.

Is there any way to salvage the stock, maybe a long recoil pad, or add a wood extension on the end?
Yeah, it can have an extension cut and fitted. It won't be perfect but unless you are a purist it won't matter. Without seeing the rifle it's hard for me to say if I would get it for myself. Does it have the original buttplate and if yes, was the plate trimmed to where the stock was cut? Anyway, yes, the stock can be extended. Heck, might make a cool project.

I'll just add a couple comments. First, this gun is harder to find in .243 and that caliber is usually worth a premium. Second, although some folks prefer the pre-64 for cut checkering, etc., these guns were not without problems, and in later production guns these issues were resolved. From a functional perspective, the best M88's were the later ones.
