I was just looking at an Cabelas add they show winchester has changed their primer coating and advertised as improved sensitivity ? Why would I want sensitive primers, I mainly use CCI but is their an issue with Winchester primers I have used them in the past they went bang , ATTACH=full]758583[/ATTACH]

I think Winchester caught some flack recently for dead primers. This is there way of saving face while letting the consumer know they have fixed the issue. It sounds a whole lot better than, ..hey our qc slipped for a long time, we denied it, but now we are paying attention. We promise...

That's what I'm saying that must the dumbest thing to write in a primer box

I thought Win SPP already tended towards more sensitivity than say, CCI. I've got both but don't see a difference in my guns (autos).

My issue with WLR primers is that they are on the small side. If the coating brings them more in line dimensionally with their competitors and SAMMI specs I might start using them again

Unless Winchester primers have a “new new” surface finish, that’s probably just an old stock photo from a few years back when they did change their surface finish like Blue68f100 mentioned earlier. Other sellers don’t seem to be aware of any “new” change.

It cabelas website listing today even states new version on the add

I was at the Cabelas in Allen, Texas, last night and they apparently haven't gotten the "new and improved" ones yet. That was okay by me since the "old and unimproved" Winchester ones have worked fine for me.

They had moved the powder from behind the gun counter so I didn't have to body-block any of the scarce employees (and if you'll remember that I'm 5' 4" tall and handicapped, physically intimidating someone is a tall order for me) to get to it this time. Big improvement from my last visit!

While I went to look for powder and primers, my wife stayed in the clothing section to look for clothing she wouldn't be embarrassed to see me wearing. She didn't find anything for me but she did find several things that on a sale rack she thought my son would like, but the tags didn't show any markdown so she decided to not risk that they had been hung on the wrong rack.

Why would I want sensitive primers,
Some guns that are lightly sprung for competition need a primer that is easy to set off. Those folks buy Federals almost exclusively. I imagine Winchester is trying to gin some of that market. If they won't ignite on folks guns with light springs, they still won't sell, no matter what it says on them. I am not sure how the finish can help there. Thinner cup yes, more sensitive mix, yes, better surface finish? Dunno.

Federal has Nitroglycerin, others don't. See SDS or MSDS.

The nickel finish may be harder , could be why Win removed it a few years back. (10?)

Hmmm, Ive used a ton of Winchester SP, LP, and SR. I only recall one SR out of all of them fail, and on examination, it must have been loose, it had somehow worked its way proud of the proper seating depth. I have had several, ( still a small number) of CCI LP fail, for no apparent reason I could see.

I was using the WLP primers for both of my large pistol cartridges. Until I tried CCI large mag primers. Far and away better. It completely changed the attributes of the fifty A.E., even though the WLP are supposed to be magnum approved. I am very glad to have experimented with them when I saw them on sale.

I have used many Winchester primers as well with no problems, but I don't have any lightly sprung guns.

I still use WLPs for the fourty five auto. It wasn't broken, so I didn't fix it. (But I did try to.) The CCI three fifties showed no effect. Quite literally the only time a primer made a difference in my firearms was with the fifty A.E.

Between the brands of primers I see little difference when shooting them. The only difference is some of the non US primers tend to be a tighter fit in the pockets. This is good when trying to squeeze a couple more reloads out of brass with loose primer pockets.;) I have not yet tried any of those with that on the box however.

I have never had a problem with Winchester or CCI primers.

I have heard nothing about new Winchester primers and there is nothing on their site.

If that is actually a new photo I'm guessing it's aimed at customers who can't find Federal handgun primers for a very long time. They might be looking to pull away some of their share.

That is my take also.

I've had some bad experience with some older Winchester SPP and have basically standardized on CCI for pistol (easily available) and Federal for revolvers (sprung for competition; spec'd for Federal primer only). I've sometimes loaded Federal in 9mm when CCI was harder to find. Recently finding Federal SPP has been quite a chore and I'm down to my last 13k.

A friend sold me his tuned G34 and it had some issues consistently setting off CCI SPP, but seating them with my C0-Ax bench tool seems to have solved the problem.

Maybe it's time to give Winchester SSP another chance

I have a bunch of Winchester LPP I'm using without issues but only used CCI SPP. I don't have any tuned revolvers is I'm ok with the CCI SPP.
