Anyone have any opinions of Winchester's O/U. I was looking at the Select Sporting with a 30" Bbl. It's made by FN and I like it a lot. I want to get more serious about trap and 5 stand and I want to try sporting clays. I am stepping up from a Mossberg 500.

I was reading the thread about the Ruger Red label. Would this be a better shotgun for me? Browning maybe? Which ones are American made? "American made" would be nice but I think Rugers are the only ones, right?

I shoot maybe once a month. I plan to compete locally sometime in the future, nothing major, just fun.

Thanks,
Delmar

A couple guys I shoot trap with have been using them. From what I've seen, they are pretty decent guns. With respect to comparing them to a Ruger (or Browning or Beretta), you really need to handle them and see which fits you the best. If you can shoot them first, it's even better.

A properly fitted O/U is a joy to shoot. One that's not can be flinch-inducing misery. For a number of reasons (stock geometry, unmoving action) recoil can get unpleasant... especially when shooting high volumes of 12ga target loads.

Some people can shoot O/Us "off the rack" with no problem, but most of the folks I know (myself included) have made some significant adjustments to use them comfortably. This isn't a criticism of the platform, since I really enjoy shooting O/Us, and consider them ideal for most clay games. I just consider it important that the gun fit be as close as possible from the start.

I agree that shotgun fit is of course a most important factor. Saying that, and saying that I am in no way a shotgun expert, I do have a Select Energy Sporting, and also some Brownings and Rugers, over/unders. The Select Energy Sporting I have is a very good gun, in my not so expert opinion, for the price. It's fit is very good and the wood is very pretty, and as you say, it is made in Belgium at FN. So I think, it you like it and it fits you, it is a very good shotgun for the price and you could definitely be happy with it.
