I am loading 115 gn 9mm at 6.5 grains of Accurate #5. The only small pistol primers I could find are Winchester Small Pistol for Magnum loads. No one in town has any small pistol for standard loads.

Is there any problem using these primers in this standard load?

Thanks,
Rick

Win small pistol primers are for standard or magnum loads, re read the box. Win only makes one small pistol and one large pistol primers for both std and mag loads.

I re-read the box again and also checked several online retailers. The small pistol primers say for magnum loads and the retailers list separate small pistol primers for magnum or standard loads.

However, my box of Winchester large pistol primers states it is for magnum or standard loads.

So it looks like for small pistol, there are two different kinds of primers.

Hence, back to my question as to whether or not the magnum primers would cause a problem

KAB55 is incorrect regarding Winchester small pistol primers as they do make a standard and a magnum version. Winchester only makes one LARGE pistol primer for use in both magnum and standard loads.

The Winchester SPM primers are a very hot primer, more so than any other pistol primer I've used. You can use them quite successfully in your 9mm HOWEVER it is important to use the start load (10% bellow MAXIMUM listed) and work the load up. With some powders you may see pressure signs before reaching the maximum charge level in which case you need to stop and go to the previous lower charge.

The max load with Accurate #5 is 7.0 grains, and the start load is 6.3 grains. I am loading at 6.5. Not quite 10% under max, but pretty close. I think I will drop the load a touch and try these to make sure there is no signs of over pressure before loading the rest of the 1000.

Thanks for your help.

BHFG, do you mind to post your results? I've been able to find small pistol magnums, as well--but no standard small pistol. I'm considering using them to load my .38 Special with Bullseye, well below max---hearing your results would be beneficial. Thanks.

I fired 200 rounds today with the magnum primers with no issues. But, I was using a light load and made sure to keep my seating towards teh max OAL to keep pressures down.

Be careful with trying this with your .38 loads. I am not sure how the case pressures compare to 9mm loads.
