Every month at the local light rifle match, they have a 10rd, offhand, side match for iron sighted rifles*. Typically, I will shoot that side match with one of my ARs equipped with a drop in .22 conversion- or one of the various other older rifles that I have. I decided to try my WASR-22 for the second time yesterday. I used it once previously in this role, without much success. Before shooting it yesterday, I made sure that my sights were ready to go- and actually set up for a 6-oclock hold.

The ammo was simple federal 36 grain bulk hollow points.

My experience reaffirmed several things that I have long thought about AKs- the sights such for bullseye type shooting, or at least they are much more difficult to use than refined peep type sights. The (skeleton) stock, like the military stock, which adds to the difficulty. The ergonomics don't help.

Obviously, bullseye type shooting isn't what AK pattern rifles were designed for, but I am impressed what I can do with my WASR-22.

(* I also won the main match, 30 rounds off hand on official NRA light rifle targets using my peep sight equipped Winchester 75:))

Target

Pretty nice shooting. Not what I would expect.
I wonder if the target was a help.
That is the B2 50 foot slow fire pistol target. The proper target for 50 ft. Light Rifle is the A32 which is a
smaller bull.....less than two inches in diameter as compared to the B2 which is more than three inches.

I've been interested win the WASR22 but I've never seen spare mags offered which has stopped me cold.

On the high shots, I felt myself wandering into the black from a 6 o'clock hold.

The pistol target is used for the side-match. It was selected to accommodate the older eyes of most of the shooters. The proper A32 is used for the main (actual light rifle) match. Most people shoot that with scoped rifles. Since last spring, I have been trying to use irons for that well. It's amazing how much the groups can open up on the bigger target. With the Winchester 75, I shot a 271 of 300 Sunday. Most of the shots were in the 9 ring and 10s/x's more less made up for the 8s. I could easily keep that same rifle in in the meat of an A17 target at the same distance.

I'm lucky enough to have a pile of them- 2 Black Dog hicaps, 1 facotory plastic 10, and 2x 10s in metal bodies (like the one pictured). There are more than a few of them out there...and they can eitehr be real affordable or pricey. The bigger problem than the magazines in the extractors. If that get's lost you're up a creek, unless you can get one made.

So....you found the larger target less precise. When will you try the WASR on the A32? That'd be neat to see, especially if your group tightens up.
