Around here its still 70+ degrees and T-shirt weather, we don't have enough "heavy coat" weather to be worth the testing and practice with a larger gun for carry in such times.
Thank you all for the comments! I'm impressed and learning a lot. We cannot be in Margaritiville all the time! Going to Vermont for a few weeks in March.
Just a note, Constitutional carry is practiced in Vermont. No permit is required to carry a gun concealed or open carry and they don't distinguish between residents and non-residents.
Too bad Vermont and Alaska are so cold all the time or I would move there!
Yes, with not so much difference, but a whole bunch of difference. Warm weather carry is a j frame 32 or j frame clone. Cold weather carry is a 6 inch 44 mag with lightish loads under a cast 200 gr HP. Same manual of arms, same number of rounds, a sure bet that it will poke through a heavy coat.
I sure do change with the seasons. In the summer it’s a two inch model 37-2 in my pocket and in the winter it’s a three inch model 37 no-dash OWB with a cover garment.
I like to pocket carry in my winter coat, so when it's that cold out I start carrying that way on occasion instead of IWB and I stick to wadcutters or ball ammo if it's really frigid and everybody has twenty layers on. Not saying it's the only way to fly, just what I do.
Same handgun(s). Simply another layer or two of covering garments. Since my job requires me to dress like a grown-up and I can't wear shorts and t-shirts everyday (I would if I could), I'll stick with full-size pistols ...
I do indeed change my CCW sidearm with the seasons. Although OC is legal here in SD I have never one time seen anyone OC except for LE/security or hunters in the field. Okay, the staff at a couple local guns stores carry in the store. At any rate, the first C in CCW stands for concealed! It's not uncommon for summer temps here to run into the low 100's and here in the east it's always very humid. In the hottest weather it's not easy to hide an HK USPf9 or P30S without printing. And if I do cover it up with baggier/longer/more clothing the extra area of the holster gets a little hot.
Maybe this is a lame excuse and I should just 'nut up' and deal with it. But normally I switch to my LCR or Nano when it's really hot. Probably when summer rolls around again I'll try carrying my HK USPc 9mm. I didn't get the holster for it in time to get much CCW time before it started getting cooler.
I don't have a situation where I carry an unfamiliar gun four times a year! All my CCW guns get regular range trips and practice sessions at home. I focus on the gun I plan to carry to reinforce good habits.
Summer Taurus PT709 (and when I'm lazy), Pocket Holster
Winter/Fall Glock 19 Gen 3 OWB holster
If I'm going someone where sketchy I'll opt for the Glock but that darn 709 is sooo comfortable to carry. Wish it held more rounds and mags were cheaper.
Not really, but I may add a bigger gun to the rotation. About the only time I carry a smaller gun is in the summer when my work requirements mean that it has to be 100% invisible.
Spring and fall I'll usually carry an sp101 owb as well as a little .380. In the winter I'll switch to a full size high capacity high capacity 9mm and keep a .380 in my pocket.
If cold enough for a decent cover garment I'll don my Combat Commander. Don't like to carry it IWB, and don't like wearing long clothes when warm, but if below 60F I put on the OWB and go with it.
