Winter Carry: Your Thoughts

It's cooling off outside and I've been able to carry the full-size 1911 with ease. I think many of you can probably relate to this benefit.

I carry a Sig 1911 year 'round in a Serpa holster. If it's cold I wear a jacket and conceal, if it's warm I carry open. Life is much less stressful when you don't have to worry about all that.

I live in Northern Utah, hot hot summers cold cold winters. I carry the same gun year-round, I don't see a need to switch to something bigger and heavier just because I'm wearing more clothing, it's not like I'm in more danger in the winter, and I have total confidence in my year-round handgun.

Let's see. Cold weather = sweaters and coats. Hmmm...concealment. Time to bring out the .357 mag revovler...eh?

Vest Pocket Carry with DeSantis Nemesis

I carry a Makarov in my vest in a DeSantis Nemesis.

No, I don't mean a "dress" vest that goes with a three piece suit, I mean one that has some down filling that Minnesotans wear for warmth. It has two "Napoleon" type breast pockets, and I carry a Makarov in the left breast pocket.

A vest with a little down in it and the Nemesis holster don't print at all. The Makarov is a perfect fit, and has proven for me to be utterly reliable and, while I'd prefer something bigger (like a .44) it's much better than not being armed. My vest is just a tad small to conceal a USP:scrutiny:

Winter weather means two guns as a general rule. The added clothing makes them easier to conceal -- and two guns are always better than one.

No problem. I carry my 1911 year round. it hides under my teeshirt. IWB at 5 o'clock. Unless I am bent over or climbing a latter It is un noticable.

A correlative problem with this is that extra cover garments means more "stuff" between your hand and your gun if you were to need it.

I usually (90% of the time) carry a BUG on my ankle, but I've been thinking about moving it around. When walking around in the cold, it's nice to have your hands in those warm coat pockets, but that's yet another step between your hand and your gun. Unless...

I'm curious if anybody carries a small gun in their jacket pocket, if so, how?

I was considering carrying my J-frame there, possibly by sewing a cheap Uncle Mike's pocket holster in there to keep it upright. I've also been walking around the house with a PM9 crossdraw IWB, but it's hard to argue the benefit of pocket carry. The quickest draw is certainly the type in which you don't even have to "draw" and can already have your hand on your gun without being obvious. Hell, with a revolver, you could just shoot through your coat if you had to.

Anything else pertaining to carrying in the winter would be of interest.

Yeah man, I feel a lot less nervous [only been carrying for a month] now that it's colder and I can wear a sweater or jacket over my IWB.

It's a lot more comfortable just not having to constantly worry

"am I printing?

Is that lady staring at my hip?

DO THE SECURITY CAMERAS HAVE X RAY?"
hahah, just kidding.

Seriously, I'm a big guy, but sometimes when I'm carrying with just a T-shirt and shorts, I feel uneasy.
