Winter Carry

We are finally getting some cooler weather here. So, when I can throw on a coat, I try out my new loboleather pancake for my Model 10 HB. It wears good and matches my boots, lol. The usual G17 still goes IWB, tho.

Unless I know I'm going to be outside for the duration, I can't understand changing methods for winter carry. I'm almost always on my way to another location with controlled environment and as hot natured as I am, I'm gonna be dressed to stay cool once the coat comes off.

Here in Washington, concealed carry (with a CPL) is an option, not a requirement. In other words, printing, inadvertent exposure, partial concealment, or even open carry are all lawful behaviors. So for me it’s pretty much the same guns all year. If I want concealed, I have an XDs, if I want a larger gun, I carry a larger gun. The time of year is entirely moot.

I generally pocket carry in the summer (a .380), and OWB a larger 9mm in the winter.

Pocket in the summer, minimalist OWB in the colder climes...I only carry a 642 or Model 40 S&W J frames. I am more than comfortable with having to defend myself, should the "opportunity" present, with just 5 rounds.

In my opinion and for what it's worth, with the proper holster, belt and cover garment, you can carry the same weapon year round.

Yes and no. I could get away with carrying my 1911 OWB all year round if I wanted, but my shirt would have to be really long. I wear size large comfortably, and without it looking huge on me. An XL would probably hide it alright, but I'd look like a bum. No thanks, I'll just wear IWB in the summer.

Smalls, he said you can carry the same weapon year-round. Didn't say it was OWB or that you'd use the same holster.

Although I usually carry my Glock 17 year 'round, it is nice to take my (fullsize) HK USP45 out for a winter-time excursion, or three.

Gotta let it know that it is still loved. :D

:) Yeah, that's my kind of therapy...

I re read it, and that makes sense. I assumed he meant the same holster.

I didn't mean to imply that, but I actually do use the Don Hume year round, and as I stated, with the right belt and shirt, it isn't an issue. If I didn't have the option of untucked shirts, I'd take a serious look at the Crossbreed Supertuck.;)

When I lived back in VT I typically carried Polymer firearms more than metal ones. The plastic felt better against the skin in cold temperatures (10 to 40 below).

Moved down to Alabama, no such thing as winter by comparison. So no, carry is not affected by weather anymore.

I'm certain a lot of people may be able to wear OWB all year with a full sized gun, but I think build of the person has a lot to do with it. To be able to wear what they like, at least.

I wish I could.
