Guys,
Regarding using an AR15:

Has anyone had an issue with Wolf 223 rem. ammo being so dirty that it fouls up the gas tube to the point that the rifle will not function reliably?
I am hesitant to buy a case of it and then have a similar problem the early M16s had with dirty powder. But geez, Wolf is cheaper to buy than to reload my own.

Or, IF Wolf 223 IS dirty, is there a way to clean out the gas tube? I mean the entire gas route, including the 90 deg angle turn from the barrel to the tube?

Thanks,
john l.

Haven't had any problems from the 1000 rounds I"ve fired to date. Starting on my 3rd case now. It's the polymer coated stuff, if that makes any difference.

Im still rather new when it comes to guns but from what I hear all of Wolf's ammo is dirty and burns dirty....really dirty. I dont know on my own about a good way to clean it out but i'll ask around a bit and find out what i can. my suggestion is to not use wolf ammo in your gun at all, sometimes the ammo just doesnt agree with the gun. If you are going to use wolf ammo then i would at least suggest cleaning the whole gun after your done shooting each day.

I don't notice Wolf being any dirtier than Win White Box or Q3131A, but it does smell of ammonia a bit.

Hasn't choked my Bushies even once in 1,500 rounds. Good stuff for the $$.

I've used some of the Wolf polymer coated stuff.
I think it appears to leave more carbon residue, than say Fed XM193, which is what I mostly shoot with an M4gery. Never had a problem with Wolf, but yes, it kinda smells odd.:p
Not planning on trying any Wolf in my Varminter. Sticking with match stuff, though I did try some XM193 in that.

To answer your question specifically, no, it won't clog the gas tube.
Do NOT attempt to clean your gas tube. It doesn't need to be cleaned and attempts to clean it often result in a problem such as you getting something stuck in it. IT DOESN"T NEED TO BE CLEANED: EVER.

I can't speak for using the Wolf ammo in an AR, but I use a lot of it in my AK. Never had any problems with the bore or gas system being any more dirty than with any other ammo I've shot through it. I don't take that gun out much, but when I do it sees a lot of ammo burned through it. The Wolf has shown good accuracy too.

As to cleaning the gas tube on the AR, I'd recommend you follow the above advice and leave it alone. Concentrate your efforts on keeping the bolt/carrier and reciever clean and lubed.

For my AR's I've been using the Winchester USA 62gr FMJ and it's worked very well.

Yeah it works...

I've used it in my AR and my Dad's AR180B, and Ruger Mini's. And I've shot several hundred rounds in my AR in one sitting without cleaning. I then let said rifle sit for something like a month and a half before cleaning the rifle out. No problems cleaning the rifle either.

Not very accurate ammo though. I had a 4" MOA with the stuff last outing I took. I usually get 1" - 1 1/2" with stuff like Black Hills HP. I guess I should say consistent. I was getting 1 1/2" - 2" MOA with some Wolf HP I was using. Then again I can get the stuff for $3 a box, retail. So I don't know what I'm expecting...

Wolf

I'm kinda repeating others:

Yes, shoot wolf...it's cheap and that means more shooting.

It doesn't appear any dirtier then the other cheap stuff I used to shoot.

That is the only .223, 9mm and 7.62x39 ammo I buy anymore. If I want something accurate in my varmint rig....I reload.

A high pressure system is self cleaning....gas tube that is...leave it alone. Like others said...clean the bolt and carrier and the bore.

Wolf

A few weekends ago a friend and I shot 2000 rounds through 3 different 16 uppers. There were no failures of any kind that were not related to my Orlite mags. Several times I deliberately ran 3 quick mag dumps and tried to get a polymer coated steel case stuck in the chamber to no avail.

Compared to SA it was indeed dirty. But there was nothing that didn't clean up nicely with brake-cleaner.

It is also clearly not as hot as M-193.
