Hey i have asked this question multiple times but no one has answered so i have decided to make a thread about it. Will using steel cased wolf .308 ammo cause any harm to a rifle besides possibly harming the extractor? My friend says if i tend to do a lot of hunting i should not shoot any wolf before hand. Of course i would clean the rifle before hunting and use more precision ammunition but how would using wolf damage anything?

If I was shooting em in a Saga or something along those lines I wouldn't worry, but one will never fire through my good hunting guns as long as I own it. I don't know much about Wolf except it is made in Russia and seems to be the cheapest stuff on the market. I have bought it and shot it in Ak's and SKS's. I don't have a lot of confidence in Russian quality control, that and steel cases are OK for anyone that so desires but not in my better guns. Sup to you I guess.

Your rifle isn't going to be ruined by a little soft steel. Shoot it if you like(though most of it is and dirty somewhat inaccurate) and ignore the rumor mongers.

It's all gone.

A couple of years ago, there was 7.62X51 milsurp stuff available about everywhere, and it was all South African or Portugese stuff, and very good.
It seems to be gone.
The Wolf stuff is just fine for range use, and their gold line, made in Serbia, is particularly nice ball ammo.

I hate to say it but about the only inexpensive .308 I can find now is the crappy Indian stuff. And even that is only inexpensive by comparison to todays prices. For those who like the 7.62 milsurp life is going to be tough for the near future and who knows about after that. If you have a good hoard you are ahead of the game but only a psychic knows if the good old days will return. Till then reloading will be the main focus for many of us
who enjoy the FALS, HK's and others of their breed. I have cut way back on
shooting that caliber and have started shooting a lot more russian stuff for fun. The 7.62 tokarev and 7.62x54r are still fairly cheap and easy to find.
God help us when that source dries up.

I had a wolf steel case jam in the chamber of my FAL after firing. Locked it up TIGHT. The primer was blown out of the casing. I tried everything I could think of to get that d@mn casing out. I tried tapping it out with a cleaning rod, but that only busted out the primer hole. I tried a bigger rod, with no luck. I tried using a chisel to bust out the base of the case, only to break the end off the chisel.

It sat for a year while I was out of the state. Just this last weekend I took it down to a machine shop to see if they could CAREFULLY drill out the case. The machinist used a larger piece of bar stock to hammer out the case. It only took him a minute, so he didn't charge me anything.

On inspection, I think the issue with the Wolf ammo had to do with me not cleaning the chamber from the buildup of the shellac on the casing from my previous range trip. It's baked on there real tight. I'm going to try and scrub the chamber with steel or bronze wool.

Would I use Wolf again? Probably, but I'm going to be real careful about the condition of my chamber before and after I shoot it.

I shot Wolf .308 through my CETME and Ishapore Enfield. It shot very well in both. Surprisingly accurate. Much more so than their .223.

Yeah, its a little dirty. Who cares? I clean my rifles.

Hello

Wolf shoots a lot better than Silver Bear 308. I have shot Wolf (a lot of it) thru my G3 and even Rem.700:what: The only problems I have had with 308 has been Silver Bear.

It always cracks me up that Wolf ammo is considered by some to be the worst thing you can do to your gun. I sincerely wonder how many of those rumor mongers dry fire without snap caps, or clean their gun with something stupid instead of gun specific cleansers... Lets not forget that some U.S. surplus rifle ammo made it to market loaded with pistol powder! Yeah I'll just bet the folks who blew their guns up were wishing they were shooting wolf ammo instead!
