Howdy folks,
I'm fixin' to buy a big bunch of Wolf Ammo, to feed the SKS I'm buying in March. The first and most important question is if anyone knows if their Yugo SKS's like JHP or FMJ. Secondly, I'd like to know if Wolf JHP's expand reliably enough for hunting or if I should just buy soft points.

Thanks THR.

i don't believe any 7.62x39 round has the velocity to reliably produce significant expansion with hollow points. so, probably is of no consequence whether you go with hp or fmj. the sks will digest either.

My understanding is that the hollow point bullets in the ammunition imported by Wolf are steel jacketed, and that the hollow point does nothing to aid expansion. They are for all practical matters FMJ bullets with the noses clipped off.

Some of the FMJs have the hollow air pocket in the nose which seems to assist in initiating yaw of the bullet, and increasing its wound channel.

If you are seeking blasting ammo, get the FMJ, as some of these rifles are reputed to jam up on the hollow points.

If you seek hunting ammo, get Hornady TAP ammo or Winchester white box with the soft point, and you will do better I think. Should you shoot a hog or some other critter and are interested, you might shoot the carcass with the FJM and evaluate the wounding channel to see whether it will be adequate for your needs. I suggest this because if the bullet yaws it is creating a hole much bigger than if it mushrooms, which might actually make it more effective for hunting purposes. All this assumes that FMJ bullets are legal for taking the game you are after in your state.

My Yugo 59/66 (the model with all the grenade launcher stuff) eats anything...Wolf, Federal American Eagle, some unknown Soviet Boc stuff in light grey or off-white box, Silver Bear, Golden Tiger.

With the construction of the bullets, [that is a tiny hollow point] I am not sure if that stuff actually expands much or not. I haven't recovered any fired bullets to check.

If your referring to Wolf Military Classic (brown camo box), I have had good luck from their JHP. Wolf Performance (black box) JHP have been known not to expand.

My Yugoslavian 59/66 Eats anything I feed it.

do some searches....

there's a guy who's posted some lengthy technical articles with balistic gellatin test results for most of the available rounds out there.

IIRC the Mil Classic is bi-metal....with a ferrous core and copper jacket ant their "hollow point" (doesn't look much at all like a hollow point pistol bullet) is more prone to fragment and yaw in the gellatin.

I'd go with the soft points when hunting for meat.

I wouldn't use JHP for hunting, use soft points.

Other than that, at close range the ballistics are the same for home defense- its going to zip right through the perp without expanding.

which has better penetration?

anybody have links to geletin comparisons between the fmj and HP wolf?

what about test between the military classic and the black box?

what is the difference between military classic and black box? (I heard military classic was just the old laquer coated stuff)

I've killed several deer with Russian HP ammo, and I've worked several scenes where people were killed with the same type of round.

Both the deer were DRT. One was a straight across shot the other was a quartering shot from the rear. Both bullets fully fragment. Neither were a T&T. On both the heart and lungs looked like jello and there was a lead / steel button embedded in the rib cage on the far size. The only deer I've ever lost was with Remington SP. I went back to the cheap Russian HP's.

The people autopsy's resembled the animals results.

A interesting note. When the HP round when through a car door it came out fragmented. The inside of the car was totally shredded. After 2 or 3 rounds they had chewed a large enough hole to reach the victims intact.

The thugs of my old town use to call their "AK's" (usually just a SKS with a 30 rd mag on it) "Choppers". "cus they chops people up".

If all you are doing is punching holes in paper get the FMJ. If you have any possibility of hunting with it get the HP.

Well thanks, takhtakaal...even though you sound like a severe crab-apple-McNasty. Relax a bit, brother, you don't want to make Art's Grammaw faint.

Nor you. Washing your socks out more often might help.

Seriously, this is a constant topic. A bit of search would turn up answers.
