Steel ammo will not snap and extractor unless its made of plastic. People shoot thousands of rounds of this stuff in AR's everyday and I have yet to hear of a snapped extractor
I have 1 case for you, my brothers 7.62x39 AR15, shot 200 rounds of brass cased yugo just fine, switched over to a 20 round box of tula and snapped the extractor after just 3 rounds.
.....that's because any steel cased bullet will snap the extractor with extended use.
Would love to see verified stats that can back up that statement. That is funny. (and even more so since the extractor does not touch the bullet)
my mistake, I meant steel cased "round" instead of bullet...so sorry to be politically incorrect. I'm going to go home and change the texture to my pistols handle and put a few clips of ammo through it and maybe later I'll check to make sure my barrel isn't fowled.

tahunua, isn't that sort of a stretch to say that using steel cased ammo will cause your extractor to snap, just because it happend once to your brother's rifle?

In my experience, running steel cased ammo does not accelerate wear on the extractors at all. Maybe your brother's extractor was defective. Personally, if I had a 7.62X39 and it wouldn't run on steel cased ammo, I'd be pretty ticked off.

I run steel cased ammo through at least 6 of my guns (7.62x54r, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, .45acp, 8mm Mauser) and have never had a problem with it. In fact, alot of the surplus, laquered case ammo is some of the most accurate and reliable ammo I've fired from the Mauser and WZ. 88. The ammo was military issued in the ComBloc for many, many years and saw a great deal of service and seems to have worked fine for them. I think it's gotten an unfair reputation but for the life of me, I can't figure out why.

The steel used in steel cased ammo is far softer than the extractor. I've used steel cased ammo in a lot of firearms without any broken extractors.

If a firearm can shoot steel cased ammo reliably then great.

I've shot such a large amount of steel cased ammo through such a large variety of guns that I'm of the opinion that it ain't much of a gun if steel cased ammo breaks it!

OTOH, I always say: If you've never broken a gun, you just ain't been shooting enough!

It seems to have taken a while for the makers to get the 7.62x39 AR right. The extractor has broken on both my .30 cal ARs (7.62x39 and 7.62x25), and a bolt lug broke on the 7.62x39 -- gun continued to run for no telling how many rounds as I only noticed it when I finally decided it needed cleaning. Easy to fix and the replacement parts have already proven to hold up better. To my knowledge there is no 7.62x25 steel cased ammo available.

I've yet to break a .223 AR extractor and I pretty much shoot only steel cased ammo. I did have one AR that stove-piped badly with steel cased, but not brass. A little detective work and extractor swapping proved the extractor was out of spec (swapped the suspect extractor with an AR that was fine and the problem followed the extractor), a few measurements showed the distance between the hook working edge and the bolt face was too small but using brass cased ammo papered over the issue. A new extractor and no issues since.

Six or seven years ago the steel cased stuff was ~$90/1000 -- I shot a very large amount of it back then and much of it was lacquer, which also gave me no problems. Now that the cost has more than doubled I can only shoot about half as much :(

that's interesting, lacquered steel cased x25 is the only stuff I've ever seen.

of course I have heard several other cases of guys snapping their extractors and read about it online but I didn't really feel like tracking it down and calling up all my AR buddies. I will agree that the 7/62x39 ARs are pretty much garbage. my brother spent about $1300 and 3 months of dremel work and ordering new parts before it was even marginally reliable. granted I think he may have started out with blackthorn parts but again that may not be the case.

call me old fassioned but if I'm shooting and the first time I try something new something breaks I probably will go back to what worked before...since my brothers unfortunate incident I have solely shot brass out of my AR, I still shoot steel out of my XDM and bolt guns but the AR I just dont want to risk it.

I'd like to know where you've seen it.

I've shot lots of Bulgarian, Romanian, Polish, and Chinese 7.62x25 and its all been brass cased and Berdan primed. The Wolf 7.62x25 is part of their "Gold" line which is rebadged brass cased Privi.
