Greetings all,

At the local shows a fairly large ammo distributor/remanufacture Miwall (http://www.miwallcorp.com/, sells their stuff at outdoormarksman.com and at shows) has a substantial amount of various shotshells.

Last time I was there, I picked up a bunch of Winchester Super-X 12ga 00 buckshot and slugs. Alas, the slugs are incredibly punishing (1600fps), not to mention expensive. The 00 buck is just what I'd expect, but is $2.50/5rds.

Are there any American made "discount" shot/slugs that are available outside of WalMart (I refuse to shop there)?

If not, how do Wolf shot/slugs compare to domestic production stuff? Are they of decent enough quality to get good patterns? How about for HD?

As long as it's consistent, reliable, and cheap I don't mind. I'll save the good stuff for more deserving use, but want something fun at the range and possibly to keep in the tube to keep around the house.

Cheers!

I am not sure where Wolf shot shells are made, I know there centerfire rifle/pistol ammo is made in Russia and the Wolf .22LR ammo is made in Germany.

You can get discount Remington ammo at any large sporting goods store that sells guns and ammo(Dicks, Gander, Cabela's, Gart's etc). It might be more expensive than the same ammo at Walmart, but if you buy a case you will probably receive a discount off the price.

I haven't fired any Wolf shotshells but they are made in Spain. A dealer that had a large quantity of Wolf & Estate for the same price told me the Wolf performed fine but that the Estate was cleaner in response to me asking. The Estate is a Texas brand owned by Federal since 2001 and shot fine for me. Try searching for Estate Cartridge Company for more info.

Trivial detail, sure- but Estate isn't in Texas any more, Dorothy. It was bought out by Blount, then Blount sold all its ammo manufacturing components to .mil/.gov giant supplier ATK (Alliant). Alliant promptly boxed up all the Texas manufacturing plant and moved it on up to Anoka, MN and nestled it next to the Federal production lines.

It mattered to me because I really, really liked Estate's low recoil 00 buck load, and I was afraid something bad was going to happen to it when Estate sold out to Blount.

It did...

Now, in addition to my favorite $3 per 10 round box buck load being out of production, a big chunk of civilian/commercial ammo producing capacity is in the hands of one more megacorp. That does not make me have warm fuzzy feelings about the reliability of the civvy ammo supply line. I liked it a lot better depending on a small independent company in Texas.

I called 'em up in Texas when I found out the plant was getting moved to MN to tell them how much I had liked dealing with the company. The girls in the office were crying, their jobs were going away too.

Oh well... progress, right??
