Woman shoots carjack suspect in N.O.

Incident revives shelter dispute

A Boutte woman shot a man twice in the chest after he allegedly tried to force her to give up her Jeep Cherokee on Thursday afternoon in the Warehouse District, the New Orleans Police Department said.

Thorlief Thorbjornsen, 42, who is homeless, was listed in serious but stable condition Thursday at Charity Hospital.

The 32-year-old woman told police she had left work and was getting into her vehicle at a U-Park lot in the 800 block of Camp Street about 5 p.m. when Thorbjornsen approached her, indicated he had a handgun and demanded she get out of her car.

Instead of complying, the woman reached into the center console of her Jeep and pulled out a 9 mm pistol. She shot Thorbjornsen twice in the torso, said Capt. Marlon Defillo, NOPD spokesman.

Thorbjornsen collapsed behind the woman's SUV, Defillo said. He did not have a weapon.

Defillo said police will not book the woman but as a formality will turn the case over to the Orleans Parish district attorney's office for review.

When Thorbjornsen is released from the hospital, he will be arrested and booked with attempted carjacking, Defillo said.

Interesting. We just had a discussion on the handguns forum about this. A lot of people said it would be "irresponsible" to have a gun in an easily accessable place within the vehicle.

What's with the subheadline???

"Incident revives shelter dispute"

What does that have to do with a guy trying to commit grand theft with the threat of a weapon?

Or is this just a jerky media character trying to imply that if citizens funded more homeless shelters they wouldn't have to go out and try to rob women?

Good for her. I bet car jacking drops off sharply for a while at least.

Bad mistake ... I think nearly all new cars around NOLA come with guns in the glove boxes! :p

(Not to mention the brief cases/purses of the people driving them. :scrutiny: )

Well he ain't homeless now!

IIRC they passed a law down there a few years back that declared open season on carjackers since Da Big Easy had been high on the list of carjacking cities. After that horrible law was passed/changed jackings dropped dramatically.

If this woman is allowed to get by with this dastardly deed the rate will probably drop even further. :neener:

Good thing this didn't happen in Michigan or she would have been compelled to run him over after she shot him.

Waiting patiently for Don Galt to respond to this thread.

Brother, you crack me up! (^5)

Saw this on the news last night. It seems like the police were not hassling the woman at all, just took her to the station to ask get all the details. She got him twice in the chest. Seems like good shootin' to me.

And they did pass a law because of a high number of carjackings a few years ago. And when a few people started shooting carjackers, the frequency of the crime sharply declined. It is now a rare occurance.

The key word here is Camp St...........not a good part of town........now that I think about it I don't believe any part of downtown New Orleans could be considered a good part of town.
