A daring hairstylist stabbed a gun-wielding robber in the back with a pair of scissors Wednesday night at her Northwest Side salon, then ducked as he shot at her.
With 20-20 hindsight, Lia Austin said she wouldn't recommend that anyone do what she did at her hair studio in the 6300 block of Wurzbach Road. She's concerned that she could be a target for revenge because police were unable to find the robber after he fled on foot.
"We gave him everything we had, but he started insulting us and screaming," Austin said. "So I stabbed him."
The robber, wearing a black ski mask, dark coat and tan pants, entered the salon just after 7 p.m. He was described as Hispanic, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds.
He stole one customer's wallet, another's credit cards and money from the cash register. As he leaned over a counter to reach for a drawer, Austin went after him with the shears.
"I had the scissors in my hand already and thought it was a good opportunity to get him because he was pointing the gun down," she said. "I just had the adrenaline in me; I wasn't thinking."
With shears poking through his jacket, the robber squeezed off a shot that hit a display case before his gun jammed and he ran out of the business.
A helicopter and K-9 officers helped comb the neighborhood, to no avail.
He left with a little more than $100 and a hole in the back, San Antonio police Sgt. Domingo Alcala said.
"She's a gutsy lady," Alcala said. "I think it was a reflex action on her part and that she now realizes it wasn't the smartest thing to do."

Do you carry when getting your hair cut? It would be bothersome and you would be at a very high risk of exposing your gun since you're sitting down and all. Some things to think about I guess.
