Women's Self Defense Books?

I want to keep my lady as safe and protected as possible. One the best ways I can think to do that is for her to be able to better take care of herself. She's by no means helpless but we could all be better prepared. We're planning to take some self defense classes together but I'd also like to get her some books to check out.


The Cornered Cat comes HIGHLY recommended and from what I've seen so far it deserves it (plus the author seems like a great lady)

Personal Defense For Women


I was thinking of ordering that one in addition but wanted some feedback. What other books would you recommend? They don't all have to be specific to women (I have a lot to learn as well) but ones that apply to the real world.

As a man, I've learned from Cornered Cat. It's intended audience is women, but 95% of the information on there is gender-neutral but from a woman's perspective.

The cornered cat website is excellent. I have not read the book, but I expect it is good as well.

I bought several books by Paxton Quigley for my ex-girlfriend. These books seem quite good. (I bought my own duplicate copies so I could read along with her and discuss...)

As always, I'm a HUGE fan of anything that Massad Ayoob writes.

Congratulations on having a strong woman! Continue to take good care of her.

I have read the Gila Hayes book. It is excellent. It's written for women, but most of it applies equally to men.

Recommended Reading

Massad Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme" should be the #1 required reading for anyone who contemplates arming him- or herself.

After that, Paxton Quigley's "Armed & Female" is directed specifically at women, although we men can learn from it also. I've given copies to several women who expressed interest taking responsibility for their own safety and security.

I believe these should both be read before a woman ever holds a loaded gun or points it downrange.

I also have a copy of "Survival Shooting for Women", a slim volume by Tom Givens, that I have lent to several women who have found it useful.
