I finally took the plunge and changed the comb on my Browning 425. It now points a little better and I hope will not hit me in the same spot anymore.

However, I am trying to match the finish as closely as possible. So, in an effort to let me continue with the project tonight (and not have to wait until Browning customer service opens in the morning)...

Does anyone know what finish Browning applies to their current-production wood-stocked shotguns? From the initial sanding/reshaping, it appears that there is some sort of clear-coat (I'm assuming polyurethane), and not simply an oil-based finish..

Why the hurry to finish it if you are not sure it's going to whack you?? Why not shoot it as is until you are sure it fits well and the POI is exactly where you want it.( I shot my 390 with a Wenig stock unfinished for almost 6 mos before I was sure of the fit) I don't know what Browning uses but would guess an epoxy so I don't kow how well a partial refinish will do. I've done a couple Beretta 682's but took all the finish off the buttstock except the checkering area which I masked. Then I used a Pro Custom finish from Brownells which can be finished to a high gloss like the epoxies or softened with fine rubbing compound to a softer sheen. Good luck Nick

Fecmeh - Thanks for the response. What I've decided upon for now is simply putting some satin polyurethane over it and then sanding it down to 1500 grit. Mostly, I just want something very slick. If this works well, then I'll strip it and refinish from scratch. Or, if it looks mostly OK I may leave it. If this works, this gun is going to get shot a LOT, and looks are secondary.
