Satin polyurethanes and other modern finishes are very durable.
If the satin finish is from an oil such as tung or linseed, it's not so durable but it's easy to renew the finish. My favorite is a tung oil and beeswax mixture, though I only have it on a few guns. It like the soft glow that it gives the wood.
"Satin" refers to that soft glow, neither flat and dull nor shiny and glossy. Several different chemical compounds can be used to give a satin finish. Durability depends on the compound that's used.
