So I just got some new woodn grips for my Model 64, replacing the Pachmayr Grippers I hated (yeah, I know, the whole wood grips on a SS revolver!).

So my question is, any tips for cleaning? I would think stuff like Gunscrubber, which I use, might be harmful to wood. But, if I take 'em off, wouldn't gunk and stuff get where it shouldn't? I guess I could put the Pachmayrs back just for cleaning, no chemical I've used ever seemed to harm them.

I dunno, maybe if I wrapped a rag or something around the wooden grips that would work. They're just some generic round butt K frame checkered grips with exposed backstrap I got from eGunparts, but they have the cool S&W logo so ruining them would not be a good thing.

Any advice appreciated!

keeping your bore solvents off of the wood is always a good idea to prevent any possible staining. For cleaning and conditioning the wood, I like to use some Homer Formby's Lemon Oil treatment. This stuff cleans the wood really well and leaves it conditioned so it doesn't dry out or crack - and does it without leaving any oily feeling. I just rub it on 3 or 4 times with a clean rag every so often after cleaning the bore.................maybe once every 3 months...................depending on how much the piece has been handled.

I always take the grips off a gun that I'm cleaning. Its easier to wipe the metal down when I'm done than to clean around the grips. Its pretty hard to do with my Glocks and Kahr PM9 though....

If you leave the stocks on when you clean a gun, you'll presently end up with gunk, grit, grime, dirt, and rust on the grip frame. Might take six months. Might take ten years. It'll happen.

Cleaning pistols

Always remove wood grips when using solvents on your weapons.

Protect the wood with any gunstock oil o, linseed oil (Some has Lead in it) or furniture polish. Apply it also on the inside of the grip to seal it.
