Hey guys. The wood stock on one of my rifles seems a little dry looking. The stock has a matte finish. Is their something I can use to liven up the look a bit? Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If the stock is oiled:
Boiled Linseed Oil. Rub it on, wipe it off, let it sit overnight, rub with a soft dry rag; reapply as necessary.

Plain old Lemon Oil Furnature Polish is as good as anything for cleaning & preserving wood gun stocks.

I use it in restoration work on old Winchesters.

It is amazing how good an old black stock can look after cleaning it with 0000 steel wool & Lemon Oil!

I use Tru-oil but as a finish not to spruce up existing finish. I don't think you would be happy with the result putting Tru-oil over an existing finish.

Is it varnished, shellacked or is it oiled?

Don't know? I know it is not varnished. It is most likely oiled? It is a Winchester Model 70 Sporter Deluxe, if that helps. Thanks!

+1 on Lemon Oil

I use it on my fine furniture, rifles, and guitars. I have tried a lot of products but for just keeping the wood from drying out nothing beats lemon oil, plus it has a lemony fresh scent.

"plus it has a lemony fresh scent." which is why I don't use it on my hunting rifles. I spend way too much money to be scent free when deer hunting to use furniture polish on my guns. Lemon juice is good for wood but not a naturally occurring scent in Alabama's deer woods. YMMV of course.

Linseed oil is great stuff!

warning/achtung! lecture follows: But remember it's the stuff that makes for the "oily rags start fires" stories you may have heard about. Never seen it with motor oil rags, but just something to be aware of. 'Course, I bet any can of it these days has plenty of warnings on it?
