I thought some of you who own, or are interested in owning, one of Robert Mika's pocket holsters would be interested in this recent email exchange I had with him. I am posting it with his permission.
Good Afternoon,
I hope at the time of this correspondence that you and your family are in good health. Just wanted to let you know that I received your order and that it will be 4-6 weeks before I can get it going your way. I wish it could be sooner, believe me, but I'm just swamped with orders and completely blown away with the attention my products are receiving.
Best part of this business is knowing that I can make something in this world that can make a difference. With the response I'm receiving it sort of feels like filling in the Grand Canyon with sand and using a teaspoon to do it. I think you will find that the wait will be worth it
Thanks,
R.Mika

[4 weeks later…]
Mr Mika
I am anxiously awaiting the receipt of your product. It has been 4 weeks or so and I wonder if it is on its way? I will be making a trip soon and could really use it.
Best regards,
Bob Gallaher
P.S. I've heard nothing but good things about it and can hardly wait!

Hi Robert,
I will be starting up my Feb. orders this weekend. Had a bit of a delay due to the fact the front end my squad car blew up in a ball of fire and got totaled five minutes after I parked the damn thing. Just glad I was not driving it when it happened as it would have been a very bad day for me. Will send along a pic tomorrow if you would like to take a look at it.
Thanks,
R. Mika

Mr Mika
I would love to see that photo of your blown up squad. I gather from your email you are still working in the PD (LA?). I thought from your website info you had retired.
Just out of curiosity (and if it's none of my business just say so) - How many orders a month do you get, and how long does it take to turn one out? The reason I ask is because I wondered if it would make sense for you to find someone you trusted to help you (without degrading the quality of the product), and raise the price a few bucks to cover their labor. That way, you turn out more product and make more money, your independent contractor (not employee) makes money, your customers get their orders quicker - and everybody wins.
You are probably aware that on the THR Forum (http://www.thehighroad.org/index.php), you and your product are becoming legendary.
Best regards,
Bob Gallaher

Hi Robert,
I did retire in 1993 from LAPD, but then my son went to out of state high school (Interlocken arts academy) then the University of Michigan for undergraduate, then University of Maryland for graduate degree. Out of state schooling was not cheap so got back in the loop in 1999 as chief of police of a small town here in Wisconsin. I get a lot of orders and, between both jobs; I'm working about 16 hours a day.
Ironically enough, I'm going to be making some changes regarding production soon. A lot of people in this area are barely, I mean barely scraping by and they could use the extra income making up the holsters, at least to the final stage. I'm real picky about quality control so I would still do the final stage of putting them together. Being the chief of police has its advantages as far as the trust factor is concerned. Anyway, got to hit the rack for about 6 hours of shut eye. I think you will be pleased with your holster and find it was worth the wait.
Thanks,
R.Mika

Thanks for the info. Would you mind if I posted this on THR to inform your many customers and wannabe customers? In particular, there is a thread that is over 6,000 posts long and is all about the S&W 642 and 442. These people are crazy for Mika's famous pocket holster!
Best regards,
Bob Gallaher
P.S. I currently own and operate a 1979 Chief's Special. My next purchase will probably be the 642CT - and another pocket holster from you.

Good Morning Robert,
Sure, you can post on THR forum. Guess it will give them some idea why the 4-6 week delay. I really wish I could push these holsters out faster, but quality is everything, I mean everything to me. I'm precise and exact in my other job as well as my holster making business and I plan to keep it that way. But it is time to evolve.
Financially speaking, it pays the bills, but the biggest payoff is knowing that I can make something that works and might be instrumental in saving someone’s bacon if the situation every arose. Doing something worthwhile and making a contribution is what is important. Anyway, back to making holsters until 1600 hours and then off to the other job. Till then, take care and stay safe.
All the best,
R.Mika
