I thought some of you who own, or are interested in owning, one of Robert Mika's pocket holsters would be interested in this recent email exchange I had with him. I am posting it with his permission.

Good Afternoon,

I hope at the time of this correspondence that you and your family are in good health. Just wanted to let you know that I received your order and that it will be 4-6 weeks before I can get it going your way. I wish it could be sooner, believe me, but I'm just swamped with orders and completely blown away with the attention my products are receiving.

Best part of this business is knowing that I can make something in this world that can make a difference. With the response I'm receiving it sort of feels like filling in the Grand Canyon with sand and using a teaspoon to do it. I think you will find that the wait will be worth it

Thanks,
R.Mika

[4 weeks later…]

Mr Mika

I am anxiously awaiting the receipt of your product. It has been 4 weeks or so and I wonder if it is on its way? I will be making a trip soon and could really use it.

Best regards,
Bob Gallaher

P.S. I've heard nothing but good things about it and can hardly wait!

Hi Robert,

I will be starting up my Feb. orders this weekend. Had a bit of a delay due to the fact the front end my squad car blew up in a ball of fire and got totaled five minutes after I parked the damn thing. Just glad I was not driving it when it happened as it would have been a very bad day for me. Will send along a pic tomorrow if you would like to take a look at it.

Thanks,
R. Mika

Mr Mika

I would love to see that photo of your blown up squad. I gather from your email you are still working in the PD (LA?). I thought from your website info you had retired.

Just out of curiosity (and if it's none of my business just say so) - How many orders a month do you get, and how long does it take to turn one out? The reason I ask is because I wondered if it would make sense for you to find someone you trusted to help you (without degrading the quality of the product), and raise the price a few bucks to cover their labor. That way, you turn out more product and make more money, your independent contractor (not employee) makes money, your customers get their orders quicker - and everybody wins.

You are probably aware that on the THR Forum (http://www.thehighroad.org/index.php), you and your product are becoming legendary.

Best regards,
Bob Gallaher

Hi Robert,

I did retire in 1993 from LAPD, but then my son went to out of state high school (Interlocken arts academy) then the University of Michigan for undergraduate, then University of Maryland for graduate degree. Out of state schooling was not cheap so got back in the loop in 1999 as chief of police of a small town here in Wisconsin. I get a lot of orders and, between both jobs; I'm working about 16 hours a day.

Ironically enough, I'm going to be making some changes regarding production soon. A lot of people in this area are barely, I mean barely scraping by and they could use the extra income making up the holsters, at least to the final stage. I'm real picky about quality control so I would still do the final stage of putting them together. Being the chief of police has its advantages as far as the trust factor is concerned. Anyway, got to hit the rack for about 6 hours of shut eye. I think you will be pleased with your holster and find it was worth the wait.

Thanks,
R.Mika

Chief

Thanks for the info. Would you mind if I posted this on THR to inform your many customers and wannabe customers? In particular, there is a thread that is over 6,000 posts long and is all about the S&W 642 and 442. These people are crazy for Mika's famous pocket holster!

Best regards,
Bob Gallaher

P.S. I currently own and operate a 1979 Chief's Special. My next purchase will probably be the 642CT - and another pocket holster from you.

Good Morning Robert,

Sure, you can post on THR forum. Guess it will give them some idea why the 4-6 week delay. I really wish I could push these holsters out faster, but quality is everything, I mean everything to me. I'm precise and exact in my other job as well as my holster making business and I plan to keep it that way. But it is time to evolve.

Financially speaking, it pays the bills, but the biggest payoff is knowing that I can make something that works and might be instrumental in saving someone’s bacon if the situation every arose. Doing something worthwhile and making a contribution is what is important. Anyway, back to making holsters until 1600 hours and then off to the other job. Till then, take care and stay safe.

All the best,
R.Mika

Thanks for posting this, Rainbowbob. I goes to show what a great guy Mr. Mika is.

Lines up with my experience with Mr. Mika. One he shipped did not get here as promised...dropped him an email he responded the next day , put me on top of the list and shipped. No questions or gripes simply asked me let him know if and when the holster showed up. BTW the holster was for a M-60 no dash and gets used near bouts every day.

Wow, I just ordered 2 holsters a couple of weeks ago and got same day response from him as well. Seems like the chief has his hands full.

Quality product -- Quality service -- UNbeatable price -- from a Quality guy.

My round-cut is perfect for my 642.

This Sunday will complete week 6 for me, and so far, no holster. I haven't wanted to bother him, as it appears he is very busy. I've received two holsters from him previously, one that I ordered, and a second that he sent me for free, when I mentioned to him in an email a preference I have in pocket holsters. Both his holsters and customer service are top notch. Couldn't be more satisfied with the product, or the service. The "Mika" pocket holster works better than any other pocket holster I've tried, and they are worth the wait. I can't hardly wait to try the new SP101 holster.

As a side note, I prefer to carry my 642 in the square cut (pictured above). It stays positioned perfectly in my pockets.

My Mika pocket holster is far better than any of the four others I own. His quality and service had already impressed me. Now I read this. A quality product, a quality man.

Mr. Mika is a good man.

I ordered a holster a few months ago and when the six weeks or so rolled around I e-mailed him to check up on it. He told me it was shipping in a couple days, but then about 10 days later, still no holster.

I contacted him again and it turns out he had accidentally dropped it out of the bag of holsters to be shipped and it was separated from the other holsters in the trunk of his squad car.

Long story short, he felt terrible about the delay and gave me the holster free.

He makes great holsters too :)

I have an IWB holster from him for my Kahr CW9. I don't generally care for IWB holsters because I find them to be uncomfortable. Mika's holster "disappears" the gun and is comfortable all day long. Great price as well.

P.S. That's an impressively damaged squad car. I wouldn't mind hearing the story about that.

Here is what the Chief wrote about his squad car:

Good Morning Robert,
Saw the pics posted. Could make one wonder if it was in Wisconsin or Afghanistan, eh? . Don't know the answers why it blew yet. GM is assigning a case number to it and maybe some answers will about as to why this happened. Just don't want this to happen to anyone else as it was quite stressful first hearing the big boom and then seeing the car on fire and thinking afterwards " Gee, I was just in that damn thing no less than ten minutes ago" . Anyway , have a good day and hope you don't have any like problems with your automobile.
All the best,
R.Mika

Great holsters. One of those things you never knew you needed, but now I can't imagine toting my Taurus snubby without the Mika.

More exchanges with Chief Mika:

Chief –

Just curious...was the engine running at the time? Maybe a leaking fuel line spraying gas onto a hot engine block? Geez, man - you really could have been messed up if you were in it at the time. And then how would I get my holster? (just kidding!)

HI Bob,
Just starting my shift at my other job. No, engine was shut off. Went inside my residence and about 5-10 minutes later, it went boom! Hope GM has an answer to all of this.

All the best,
R.Mika

Chief -

Keep me posted about the car. I (and your fans at THR) are curious.

Let me know when you have a holster for me (no pressure!). But I could have used it yesterday when I was playing with my 3-year-old grandson at my home. I don't carry IWB around family at home, especially him because we hug and wrassle and play. In the pocket would probably solve that problem.

I had a pair of very hinky guys drive up my driveway in a meat delivery truck. One of them got out and approached my tied-up dog. My wife (and dog) alerted me and I went out on the deck to ask him what he wanted. He starts by asking me if my dog is a wolf (it is half - but that's none of his business!). I asked him again what he wanted. He had some BS story about not finding my neighbors home to receive a delivery, and did I want to buy some steaks - cheap? I sent him on his way and that was that. He looked like recent ex-inmate material and was trying to involve me in some kind of crime. Maybe just ripping off his employer - or maybe something else if opportunity presented itself? Something in the pocket would have been comforting.

What really bothered me later about my own state of situational awareness was that I didn't even see the guy in the truck. My wife had to point out to me (after the fact) that he was there. She said he was even creepier looking than the guy I did see. I've got to remember to be more observant!

The last time I ordered a Mika holster was over a year ago. I must have at least 6 or 7. Whenever I got a new CC gun for pocket carry I'd order one up from Mr. Mika. Inexpensive, tough and they work. I guess word has gotten out and he is indeed overrun with orders. I used to get my new holsters from him in about a week or so. Great product. God bless him.

Recent correspondence with Chief Robert Mika:

Chief -

I received my round-cut holster last week and it works exactly like
advertised and is obviously well-made with care. I love it and have
told my friends about it. Thanks!

By-the-way...Searching The High Road website for "Mika" I came up with 1,261 posts! I have read many of them and you and your products are becoming legendary. Hopefully you are hiring that extra help you talked about. I think you're going to need them.

Best regards,
Bob Gallaher

Hi Robert,
Glad you are happy with the holster. Yes, I'm in the process of mustering up additional resources to keep up with the demand and hope to have it in place within the next 10 days.
Thanks,
R.Mika
