I was just reading through the latest copy of the New Zealand Clay Target Association newsletter and in it is an excerpt from a book called "To the Target" by Daniel L Schindler. At the end of the excerpt is a dozen guideline gems to remember.

I can't lay claim to these words, but they seem to me to carry a lot of sense. Just thought I'd share them with y'all.

I've been around guns and shooting for half a century, and it takes more than a fancy stock to get my earnest attention. The common denominator for succes is hard work. Shooting well is a learned, not inherited skill. How much and how fast you learn will be largely dependent upon your personal investment. As you walk onto the layout, harness your expectations and practice patience. If you are serious about shooting better scores, consistently, instruction sessions and quality practice are the fastest ways to improve your game.

Here are twelve rules that I believe will move you steadily toward your goals:

1 Safety is always first. Set the example for others to follow.
2 When you make mistakes, be as patient, kind and respectful to yourself as you would be to your shooting partner.
3 When it comes to practice, adding quality to quantity is the recipe for improvement.
4 Leave your misses on the course but take your progress home.
5 Good shooting habits are worth far more than good shooting.
6 Guns and loads are just tools. It's what you do with them that breaks targets.
7 A good score is determined not by target count, but by your best effort.
8 You have zero control over the target. Focus on what you are doing in the box.
9 Knowledge and disciplined work will deliver more broken targets than barrel lengths, shooting methods, chokes and loads.
10 What you are thinking about - the picture in your mind - will affect your performance. Choose your images well.
11 Thank your trapper and referee.
12 First, learn what to do. Then trust what you've learned.
