MODERATOR: 2nd update request - please replace Dan Wesson with Norinco - thanks!

Poll updated by popular request!

Which 1911 model is the worst, in your opinion? A reply containing a sentence including your poll acquisition choice would be appropriate.

Don't be constrained by the poll options. I just lifted the poll options from the list of guns that are specifically recommended AGAINST by Clark Custom Guns.

In order of damage done to the name of the platform over the last 30 years the first two are do to throwing out shiny "ooo its pretty so have your smith make it run right" garbage kimber, colt, then para from the beginning of their move to the U.S after being picked up by the garbage man himself cerberus. Then there is the Remington R1 it is made by para and comes with all those wonderful para features including the weak castings (the reason why it can't handle +p even if you swapped in a stronger barrel) the para castings are famous for cracking. mwr6s6.jpg
Thats that for ones that are still making guns.
Also who the hell is Clark customs?

After going through two ORM Colt 1991s and a Kimber, those 3 almost got me to nearly swear off the 1911 platform. Particularly the Kimber. Issue after issue with virtually no customer support.

An old Springfield mil spec and an Argentine Sistema Colt brought me back into the game. The current generation of Colts are keeping me hooked on the game.

If you've never heard of Clark Custom Guns and Jim Clark your knowledge of the 1911 and it's history is severely lacking.

I bought a Llama as my first 1911 because I just had to have one. Big mistake. A good friend of mine's dad(gunsmith for many years) worked on it and couldn't get it to run. Sent it back to the factory that had it for 2 months and sent it back saying nothing was wrong. Piece of junk from day 1. Finally sold it.

Where did you find this list the Clark's supposedly recommends against? The only things I've ever seen on their site is a list of guns they recommend for 460 Rowland conversions and bullseye guns, that they won't work on 1911s shorter than 4.25", and they won't work on anything from the Phillipines.

I got it from the 460 Rowland page. Again, nothing against the platforms listed. its just a preference poll of THR members.

I put Other, because there are worse guns out there, but you can get a poor functioning gun from many manufacturers when going back in their company history they were short on funds and needed new equipment, or had poor leadership in key positions and allowed the quality to slip.
I don't think that any 1 company can be categorically deemed as being the worse.

Norinco and Para didn't make the list! but Dan Wesson and Remington Rand DID ! I'm sure the Late Great Jim Clark Senior. would be up-siding someone for that list :banghead:

I voted Other ,

.

Kimber. Once upon a time they were an outstanding pistol, but I've had a number of QC related issues and a couple more serious function issues as well. Among the list of issues were a thumb safety lever breakage, a slightly out of spec slide stop, a horrible experience with a Custom II with an external extractor (sent back to Kimber for them to fix and their fix was to replace the top end assembly with a conventional internal extractor), issues with guns being very finicky with ammunition and magazines and an ejector that came loose after about 2000 rounds (don't think it was staked to begin with). I've had numerous 1911's from Springfield and had no such issues, never had any issues with my Colts and from the Sig 1911's that I've shot, I also have had no issues with them.

well let's see, six of the brands listed (just short of half) are/were built by or at least get their raw frames and slides from the two major 1911 makers in the Philippines.
Those, plus the majority of the remaining makers on the list, are in some way out of the normal range of "Spec" either materially or dimensionally.

Odds are Clark has these brands on the "no" list because they find that these are the brands that will most commonly require additional work to bring up to snuff prior to being able to do the work they offer, and achieve their expected results

You do realize that that list is of guns they recommend against using 460 Rowland conversion kits in, don't you? And that some manufacturers are listed because they produce stainless steel guns and they don't recommend using it in ANY stainless steel guns? And others are listed because they're from the Phillipines and the fact that they refuse to work on any Philipino brands? That list has absolutely nothing to do with how those guns stack up in normal use in .45acp. I'm not a fan of many of those brands but your poll is flawed from the outset because of that.

PARA ORD!

Sheesh. That list is babnanas. Kimber and Colt have had as many bad days as good. But at least most of their pistols were serviceable. Para Ord is just straight up garbage.

They're going out of biz. TG, finally. Wake me up when they're gone for good. We need to throw a going away party.

If Clark Custom put DW on that list, I wouldn't recommend taking any gun advice from them.

There are many makers and brands of 1911s. A list of those that are not suitable for conversion to a high powered round is a good place to start.

I put in a note in the original post asking a moderator to add three more brands (maxing out the poll options) to the list.

I HOPE YOU ARE ALL HAPPY!

Let's get this back on track.

If "Clark Custom Guns" couldn't be bothered to work on a DW, then I don't take them seriously.

Just saying.

Would you be happy if I asked the moderator to replace Dan Wesson with Les Baer or Wilson Combat? lol
