Would you buy a used, heavily modded 10/22?

To me, the allure of the 10/22 is as much the quest as it is the end result. With the variety of 10/22 mods out there, you can basically build a 10/22 any way YOU want it. An already modded rifle may save you some time and/or effort, but thats not the route I'd go personally. By building a 10/22 the way YOU want it, you learn many details about your rifle that may otherwise be missed. You KNOW whats been done to the rifle, so if something DOESN'T work, you know where to start looking. Of course, one of the NICEST things about doing it yourself is shooting tiny groups and knowing its because of the weapon YOU put together, not because of someone else's ability at customizing rifles. Its a nice feeling seeing the 10 shot, one hole clusters, and knowing you squeezed that accuracy out of thee gun yourself. AS for those claiming the 10/22 to be unreliable and inaccurate.....thatg HAS NOT been my personal experience in either department. I have yet to replace my extractor, but have never had the ejection or jamming issues mentioned, regardless of ammo used (fed bulk is the usual diet). It was definitely "bunny accurate" to begin with, but is now more accurate than i can shoot it with the Green Mt replacement barrel.

Buying a used firearm is sort of a double edged sword. On the one hand, buying used is an excellent way to get into a customized rifle on the cheap. On the other hand, there is always the chance that you are just buying someone else's problems. It's really hard to tell without shooting the rifle first.

Of course, the big consideration is what they are asking for the used rifles. Personally, I recently decided to start shooting a local rimfire match and decided to do it with my 10/22. I started doing some work on it, and it's turned out pretty well. I've shot several one hole ten shot groups with it at 50 yards.

If I remember right, I added the following:
-Kidd barrel for $175
-Clark trigger for $60
-Boyd's Tacticool stock $100

I also have a bit of sweat into the project in the form of experimentation with bedding the receiver, lug and barrel, but that didn't cost me anything but the price of the JB Weld that I used. I think the prices on those used rifles is are a bit steep.

For that coin, buy a new CZ bolt 455 or 452 instead. They will shoot straight. With a modified 10/22, you have no idea what your will get unless you can shoot it first.
