Would you give this gift to your boss?

I am a telecom tech in Ohio and have about 15 other co-workers in the Ohio/IN/KY area. Our manager is an avid hunter and is also pretty pro 2A. He has mentioned that "someday" he would like to get his Concealed Handgun License, but just doesn't get around to it. Soooo, I thought I'd ask the other guys to chip in and we're getting him a certificate for a CCW course not too far from his home.

Pretty cool gift, eh? Hopefully that will be the nudge he needs to actually get his CCW license. Have you ever thought about giving this as a gift? Would you worry that it might back-fire?

Sounds like a fine gift.

My only concern would be that some half-wit would notify HR and make it an issue that your manager would rather not be roped into.

That's a good Christmas present for your boss. Several years back I did the opposite and arranged a CCW class for all my employees and other suppliers I work with as a Christmas present to them. About 70% took advantage of the class and maybe 40% of those got their permits. The ones that did not per sue the permit did so after being educated as to the laws of CCW - most liked their booze too much to give it up for a CCW permit.

Only get people that you know will be ok with the idea to go in on the gift certificate. Never underestimate the impact that mouth breathing retards will have. HR is full of them.

Yeah, definitely something to consider. Actually, one of the techs emailed me saying it was a violation of the companies code of conduct to give gifts to superiors. I quickly checked via email and an HR person emailed me back saying it was a personal gift and was perfectly acceptable. I think that tech might just be an anti- and the thought gets under his skin.

We are not permitted to carry at work or in our company vehicles, so that is a moot point as far as conflict with work. I guess worse case is that my manager felt uncomfortable with it, he could always re-gfit it to one of his hunting buddies:) But, I think he'll accept it and use it and be very happy that we gave it to him.

Wow, what a cool boss you are! You hiring? :) Actually, my company was just recently bought out so we have a new parent company. The old company was headquartered in Denver.

If I gave it to my boss, I have a very strong suspicion that I'd be fired, expelled, and faced with criminal charges. People around here get seriously freaked out over everything. The latest thing that I've done which somehow worried people: taking photographs for an English project. Unless 1/4 of the school is CIA, I fail to see the logic, and we definitely don't have any Amish.

At my office, we have mandatory range field trips (where I supply guns and ammo), and "bring your gun to work days".

I would like to think that I'm a nice boss. :)

The idea is well-meant, but...

I doubt that money is keeping your manager from getting his CCW. If he says he wants to get it "someday" but hasn't yet, he may not be ready.
Myself, I wouldn't push it.

Oh, I'm certain it's not the money. I really think it is just procrastination and having a lot on his plate - both work-wise and play wise. I called him tonight about a work issue I had to go out for and he was preparing venison from the deer he bagged Friday morning. It is possible that he may still be dealing with the issue of actually carrying a concealed firearm and needs to get more mentally ready before taking the leap.

Even if that were the case, no money lost from us as the gift certificate has no expiration date and he could use it a year or more from now. Thing is that he was the one who mentioned he needed to stop talking about getting a license and DOING it as the conversation that morning was about the amount of violent crime that has been creeping even into the nice suburbs where his family lives. The gift from us will just be a gentle nudge for him go for it and not a "push", but I understand your point.

There are couple guys I know who, even though they posses handguns, their temperament is such that I would NOT encourage them to get a CCW license. The Left would just LOVE to print a story about a CCW holder who took down a family during a fit of road rage.

dcludwig-
I agree that there are some people who may not be tempermentally suited to carry...or just not ready to take on the responsibility.
But you certainly know the guy better than any of us and are in the best position to judge. I'm sure he'll appreciate the gesture.

Off topic, I see we overlapped in RVN (I was there '68-'69.)
Never forgotten.

Gift giving between supervisors and subordinates creates multiple problems, both ways.

I'm glad you are fortunate enough to have a boss that you like well enough to give a gift. But don't. Most organizations have policies against this, for good reason.

I've actually given some thought to leaving Kalifornistan for Colorado. Where do I send my resume!;)

Oh yeah... I don't drink...
