It's been awhile since I took the Kalashnikov out but my daughter wanted to shoot it on our Father's Day range trip so I took it along. It's a Vepr2 in .223. I had maybe 100 rds. of 55gr loads including around 60 I built using a near max charge of Varget. The work up was shot through my AR and she tends to like em HOT, that's why they were loaded near max. The AR dimples the cases on the way out but not terribly. The Kalashnikov is HARD on brass though, especially the hotter stuff it seems. Kinda funny, you can tell the design is simply to sling out the old and clear the way for the new...very functional rifle. I'm not sure I should load these again after being kinked so sharp and deep...what do you think? If the answer is no, the Russian girl is gonna stay in the safe until bulk stuff gets ALOT cheaper!!! lol. I aint wasting my precious brass on her if she's gonna treat it this way!

Wow, that is some pounded brass. Personally I draw the line when I can see a line. A dent is no problem, but there's a clear line where the brass has potentially been thinned out and that would be too much of a risk for me. Maybe others have had better luck, but I don't think resizing fixes weak spots.
 
I would resize them and see what they look like then before making a decision.

The location of the dent is not a safety factor as far as promoting a gas leak back through the chamber.

They will fire-form back out completely when fired again.

if you have a bolt action rifle, i would at least resize them and see how they look, if they look good, i would use them for a bolt action on a low charge. In the pics those dents look a little deep to me to have a near max charge in again and put through a semi auto, until how they look resized. just my opinion
 
Try and see where they are hitting on the receiver and cusion it there. That will help some, and I would try a couple with light loads and see if they work after a couple reloading cycles or do split there. IMHO 223 brass is not THAT expensive to just trash them if you are worried about safety.:scrutiny:
 
Veprs, like the PSL and some other semi-autos, are hard on brass, as you can see. I know some folks have had good luck with some simple mods (try Googling for them), and their brass comes out much less 'dented'.

I'd see how they resize and give a few a try...
 
Ahhhh, the VEPR brass....... I feel your pain.

The worst I would not reload.

I tried resizing some of the worst ones, and the best ones of my lot.

The worst ones wouldn't even go in the die......

The best ones resized, but still left far too much of a dent for my tastes.
