Hey guys.....I have a quick question that could determine my purchase in the near future. My interest in firearms began a few years ago and I've made 2 purchases thus far and bought quite a bit of reloading equipment. I have a Springfield 1911 mil-spec and an AR-15.

My question is, "Would you sell those guns and some reloading equipment for an M1a?"

I've had my eye on one before I'd made those purchases........I just couldn't justify spending that much money initially. Now that I've got a few under my belt, I've been thinking about selling my other stuff to pick one up.

I mainly punch paper and I don't really hunt big game (but that could change later), so I don't know if the desire justifies the expense......but I've been wanting something that brings a little more punch at a distance.

Is it a bad idea to sell off your first purchases? Do you get seller's remorse? What are your suggestions?

I think most of us have sold guns at some point. I've probably sold 20 or more and I think I only regret maybe two. It usually comes with a change of what I am doing at the time. USPSA, target shooting, or skeet. If you get good deals you can usually change back into whatever you had before. I say get what you want and don't feel guilty about it. As long as you have enough to defend yourself do whatever with you feel like with everything else.

i'd sell an M1A to buy an AR15 and 1911 :) sure not the other way around

i've occasionally sold guns to fund new purchases, but only when i decide i don't like the old gun. i don't sell guns i like just because the "new has worn off"

NO!!!

The M1A is very expensive to punch paper with. The AR-15 uses cheaper ammo and can easily shoot 300 yards. Keep what you got if they function fine. Grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence !!!
:scrutiny:

One consideration is the availability of the guns in question. Will your dream gun be harder to get in the future? In the case of the M1A, likely not. Just save up for it and enjoy your current stable in the mean time.

Years ago, I had Savages, Rugers, and other assorted low level stuff.

I finally got smart and sold all that crap and bought a nice gun. Cooper bolt action with all the fixings. Put a sweet Leupold on it and never looked back. That one gun is accurate, beautiful and in my mind, worth so much more than the run of the mill Remingtons that everybody and their brother own.

Since then I've added 2 HS Precisions and another Cooper. I wouldn't trade those four guns for 50 Remchesters.

Quality over quantity is the direction I went.

In your situation, I'd keep the reloading equipment and sell the rest. As long as you enjoy the reloading hobby, you'll make your money back and be able to shoot a whole lot more.

I would, but your only problem is you will be left without a sidearm. A smart purchase done via forum or in private could easily fix that situation in a short period of time following your acquisition of the M1a.

Why change later when you can change now? Summer is half over, hunting season isn't far off, and there are always the feral pigs.

I get seller's remorse, but it doesn't last because I only sell things I can live without. In your case I would much rather an M1a than an AR. Hopefully you have at least shot your dream rifle and know what to expect. Ain't like the AR supply will be forever gone or anything...lol

I would do it, but it will cost you $$ for the new caliber. Like any caliber though, once you have the supplies, it is relatively affordable unless you work for minimum or near minimum wage or have high personal overhead.

I would keep the Milspec, sell the AR and save up the difference needed to purchase the M1A. Or, do as others have suggested and keep them both while saving for the M1A. That way you'll have a sidearm, a carbine and a full-sized battle rifle.

Assuming the OP has the same interests as you...

Part of the fun of being a firearms enthusiast is (for me) the fact that you can trade, swap, buy, and sell as your interests change....you're not married to your firearm.

You just can't do that with women.

You have a great setup already, with the AR and 1911. Selling both, or either, would be a mistake.

M1As are way overpriced, for what they are, and very expensive to shoot.

Yes I would, but you shouldn't because you only have 2.Keep what you have and save up for your dream gun.

Please excuse me if I offend anyone, but I simply don't understand why some people feel the need to be told or reassured by people they don't know, as to what firearm to buy or sell. Just MHO.

Since I obviously can't vouch for what you're interested in, I would just caution you to be sure it's not something you'll regret.

If you're determined to sell the 1911 and AR-15, just be sure to be patient and get your money out of them -- don't sell them for an unnecessarily low price just becuase you're anxious to get that M1A. That is something that will cause seller's remorse.

With that said, I've found myself in similar situations before. The key I've found is to buy what you want in the first place -- even if it costs a litte more at the time -- rather than settling on something else that you know you're going to sell later.

I would (and have) personally sell off multiple guns for a "dream gun", but I don't think I'd do so in your situation.

I sold off several .357s and replaced them with a longslide 10mm 1911 I'd wanted for a while. I didn't shoot the revolvers much, came out with extra cash, a gun I prefer to shoot, and some much needed space in the safe.

In the near future, I'll sell off 2 bolt guns and 2 semi .308s that I rarely shoot and get a custom bolt gun made. This time I probably won't end up ahead on the cash side, but I'll still free up some safe space and have one gun I'll shoot more than the 4 that it is replacing.

If I had but one pistol and one rifle, I'd likely not sell them to fund a single rifle. If I had 20 pistols and 20 rifles, I'd have less problem selling several off to buy one special gun.

Dependant if you live in the city or country

I might be tempted to sell all if I lived in the city but living in rural area you need a variety of weapons for hunting and home protection.

Would I sell multiple guns to get a dream gun? Sure.

Would I sell an AR and a 1911, if they were the only guns I had, to get an M1A? No way, no how, never. And I have nothing against the M1A.

I would do whatever I felt like doing at the time. There are many 1911s, ARs, and M1As out there today. Any can be replaced currently. As such, as long as I didn't have too much of an affection for the ones I own, I would trade any combination to end up with what I wanted more. Do what makes you happy. As long as you don't think you are losing your butt on the deal and that you would rather have what you end up with, go for it. Guns are for enjoyment. Life is short. Own and shoot what makes you grin.

Thanks for the advice everyone. After some more consideration, I've decided to just wait and save up. If I traded them away, I'd be firearmless for a while (and that's a bad scenario). I'm graduating college next year and my income should increase by x15.......compared to now, I'll be rich.......except for the responsibilities of car insurance, health insurance, groceries, house payment/rent. So....I might just be the same. :D

I've regretted selling most of the guns I once had.

I just got bored with them, and fancied a change. Then I got bored with the "must have" replacements, and sold them too.

Truth is, there is no dream gun for me. And finding it out cost me a bucket full of money.

I prefer to have lots of different guns to play with, depending on my mood.

Now, I weep when I think of some of the rifles I parted with.

Good call. I'm all about accumulating moreguns, provided they are quality firearms (yours are).

Hey Arizona! Think hard!!!

Hey there Arizona ... how's life treatin' ya? I think you made the right choice!!! I had this whole little thing worked up in my head then got to the last post and saw you all ready decided ... but what they hey ... this is what I was going to say. ;-) lol

Listen, none of us are you and we can't get in your head ... you have to REALLY think about what you want to do. I can TOTALLY relate to wanting that new gun REALLY BAD!!! Looking at some of the guns thinking to myself Christ can I sell some blood or a kidney or something ... COMPLETELY got you on that angle!

BTW, on a side note, don't let other people try and talk you out of something you really want ... listen to what they have to say but decide what YOU want. If you REALLY want an M1 then get an M1 ... don't become a victim of the "I should have" or "I wanted to but" ... nothing is worse than spending big $$$$ on anything and having buyers remorse before you even get the thing.

But make sure that you WANT to get rid of your other guns first ... I'd really hate for you to sell off some of your other guns to get this one then after a month the newness and the excitement wears off and you're like what they hell did I do???

Look at it this way ... BEFORE you saw the M1 would you have sold your other guns? Were you already thinking about getting rid of them? Do you never use them anymore? PLEASE think hard before you sell stuff off because you might be buying it back later!

There will always be an M1 waiting for you somewhere ... besides, wouldn't you rather have the M1 be a PART of your collection rather than your entire collection?

Take Care & Be Safe!
