Would you temporarily move to an Anti-Gun country if the money was good?

I was actually lucky enough to visit Sydney for 15 days back in the late 80s while I was onboard the USS Midway. The place was very nice and the people were great. I remember getting off the ship and there was this huge pinboard with names and numbers of folks who were willing to pick you up and take you to their houses for dinner or to show you around town. Some friends and I ended up meeting a very nice family from that board who cooked us a home made meal and showed us around the town. Nicest people I ever met.

Radagast-The jobs are in the Melbourne and Perth area. Any idea how the gun laws in those areas are? Thanks for the heads up though about some of the competition shooting going on there. That's good to know.

Hummmmm, I think I agree with most here in that the UK is pretty much out. I'll keep my eyes open for future open position posts though in Australia. We'll see what happens.

Perth/Freemantle is just awesome. That was what I meant when I said WA, (Western Australia.) You will have to occaisionally deal with U.S. Carriers coming into port, though. Melbourne, I don't know about, but they do have a racetrack there, and they sure do appreciate a nice old V8, down in OZ.

Here is a more accurate example of old Aussie Musclecars.

Never! I mean I'd never move!

If these countries were so great, why'd my grandpa move here?

Camel, brumbies & donkeys are ferals, but again usually access is via a guide on private property.
You guys can hunt camels? Wow, that must be the thrill of a lifetime...

"There's a perfect shot! Quick, before he spits again..." :D

...the happiest and most interesting people when we get old are those with stories about things they experienced, not those who say "I could have..."
Good point.

But on the other hand, if he decides not to do it, then when he gets old he'll be able to stand up straight and tell his grandkids with pride "When I was a young man, I stood by my principles and refused to give up my gun for money."

If the job and money were right I'd move to Europe, New Zealand/Oz in a heartbeat. I can always shoot when I come back to visit family (I hardly have time to shoot more than a half dozen times a year anyway - cutting back to 2-3 times/yr wouldn't be too horrible).

I wouldn't want it to be permenant, but up to 5 years would be a lot of fun. If it were New Zealand I'd be willing to stay maybe as much as 10 years if the job were right (I only say that becuase I did live there for a year as an exchange student so I know what it's like).

'Course convincing my wife to move that far from our parents might put a bit of a damper on such a move. New Zealand does allow you to have non-semi-auto rifles, and shotguns with little restriction. Semi-auto rifles are allowed with certain restrictions. IIRC handguns are right out.

There's lot of hunting and fishing opportunities in NZ (certainly better in that sense than AZ) and the people are wonderful. Like here, outside of the main parts of the big cities crime is quite low. But taxes are high, and property values are also pretty high.

NO!

to quote Paul Newman in "Nobody's Fool" when asked about a cup of tea:

"Not now...Not ever."

Perth: Capital of the state of Western Australia, some 20 to 25% of the population are english immigrants, I guess the laws over there reflect the population's origins. There are several pistol clubs shooting ISSF, IPSC & SASS matchs and a fullbore (Palma) range.

http://www.ipscwa.com.au/ will give you links to several pistol clubs.

http://www.ssaawa.net/ssaawa_sub_branches.htm will give you links to a variety of rifle, pistol and shotgun clubs.

http://www.wara.asn.au/ is the home of Palma/Fullbore rifle

The basic summary of WA law is here: http://www.ssaa.org.au/newssaa/securitylegislation/lawwa.htm

Semiauto rifles are prohibited, as are centrefire pump action rifles.

Generally you need to join a club and have the club endorse a licence application. there is a minimum 28 day wait for a licence to be issued, and their is another wait to purchase a firearm.

In Victoria (Melbourne): try http://www.ssaa.org.au/newssaa/securitylegislation/lawvic.htm for the laws. the basics are fairly similar.

You will have to compete in a minimum of six club competitions per year if you hold a pistol licence, I'm not sure about rifle licences.

Sorry if this is a bit scattered, it's after midnight and my football team just won the grand final. :)

NO! I would be afraid I would get stuck there if TSHTF!

The only way would be I have a way to come back tot he state anytime I wanted, guarented

Absolutely would. I lived in Japan, Philipines, and Korea while in the service. It was eye opening. It really made me appreciate the US, and better understand how foreigners view us, and why. I travel to Europe often for work, and the experiences there are great as well. Good coin, and a career enhancement? Go for it. Your blasters will be here when you get back.

Last year I got a very interesting offer to work in the UK. On the plus side it was closer to my and my wife's parents (they are old) and it was a very good job. On the negative side gun laws and health system. Thus, it was a "No, thanks!"

Could I do it in the future? perhaps but they better pay a pile of money. Probably I am safe: what I would want is likely more than what they would be willing to give me...

Hey BriGuy1 - It would seem that you and I chewed up some of the same territory. Were you living on your own at those places or were you stationed there? In the Philipinnes, I'm assuming either Clark or Subic Bay. Oh man, the stories from those places would make the rules of decency in this forum shatter to the wind.

Worked overseas in Asia for a couple years. Was worth the experience, but it was also nice to come back to the states. Someone said it above... your toys will be here when you get back.

One funny misperception some people had while I was working over there was that all Americans had tons of guns.
