So I have an offer on my SKS (1954 Russian, Tula Arsenal, matching numbers. refinished stock, reproduction bayonet)

... A guy wants to swap me even for a Tec 9 with barrel extension with some accessories and 100 rds of 9mm

Would you? Why or why not?
 
I wouldn't do it. Tech 9s are fun for a shorter time than a Ak and way way less useful for anything but plinking and maybe HD.
 
Well, it's an SKS not an AK

Also, I have HD guns (my .45 and my AR15) so it'd mostly be a "fun" gun. I don't shoot the SKS much at all, though it's fairly cheap to feed and all that.

If I had an AK, I certainly wouldn't swap it for a tec 9

No. If it was a Norinco SKS, maybe. Those Russian made rifles just weren't imported in the numbers that the Chinese guns were and the value, IMHO, far exceeds that of the trade offered.
 
I'm pretty much thinking the same thing. Now that I've gotten that out of the way... one of you guys *(or gals) wanna buy a russian SKS? :p

No way on earth I would get rid of a Russian like you describe.

You just cant find those anymore. when you do they are likely to cost you.

Even if you dont shoot it often Id keep it for collector value. Those things only get more expensive every year!


now if it was a Yugo it would be a different story.


Now a Tec 9. Shoot you can find those all over.
 
No, I wouldn't. Not to be rude, but in case you haven't noticed, Russian manufactured weapons are in high demand, and getting a genuine Russian SKS OR AK can be an expensive proposition, much more than that Tec 9, unless it's Full auto, and even then the SKS is worth more, and more useful.
Keep the SKS, in my opinion

The Tec 9 on the other hand, you can find in too many places to count.
A Russian SKS, I've never seen one in my life and I've been looking. Before you go advertising it for sale, look up how much they're worth before you let yourself get robbed.
 
Maybe you want to trade because you are no longer interested in your rifle. I would definitely check the price and if it is worth as much as they are saying find another way to get a different rifle. You have something that is worth a lot more IMHO. That said anytime one trades you always try to get the best possible deal yourself. Stopping here is always a good sanity check when thinking about a trade. Now if you can say "I made a good deal and got exactly what I wanted" go ahead and trade.:cool:
 
No. To me, an SKS is a useful weapon. It can be used for hunting, plinking, home defense,and survival. A TEC-9, to me, is just a toy. YMMV.
 
Tec 9 = pure junk - but fun!!! It takes a lot of tweaking to get them to work properly and even then, only with FMJ. That's my experience from the Miami Vice days.

So, no - don't trade your Russian SKS with matching numbers.
 
Tec-9 with no accessories, and one magazine will sell in a heartbeat at a gun show for $350+. It's a No-brainer, if you are talking about business. If you are buying one, a firing pin for a Tec-9 that has been dry-fired only costs $39.95 a month later.

Thing is, I have one in the safe that is more accurate than any 1911 I have ever held. Shhh, don't tell anyone, they will get upset. Yes, it ugly, poorly made, and has horrendous fit and finish issues; maybe I got lucky on a well-made one, but it can print one-hole groups from a rest at 25 yards, from the factory.

that rifle is now pushing 500 dollars (check gun broker and Proxibid.com, good all matching IN ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION IOW no plastic crap) have gone for more
so 20 in ammo, and a POS is still (250-350??)
a POS, the tec were always know for problems, still are known for problems, even in the latest version (masterpiece??)

And you have a Tula SKS, that is only going to keep going, and going and get

always better to keep an ok gun that works than trade for someone else's lemon.
 
They problem with the Tec 9 is the frame is made of plastic. Not polymer but plastic. Due to this the holes that hold the pins in become oblong instead of round in a short order. Then it won't tightly hold the pins and will become a jam o matic. I like the idea of the Tec 9 but it is just too poorely made to be worth having. No way I'd do that trade. Plus since he wants to trade it off I'd not be surprised if it's already having problems.
 
The Tec9 is nothing more than an overgrown, shoddily constructed pistol not really useful in any practical way.

The SKS on the other hand is at least a reasonable 150 yard trunk gun.

I shot a NIB one with WWB ball ammo and it was a jam-o-matic as well. I thought they were neat looking but shooting one took away my desire to own one of those.
 
Last local gun-show,

Indy-1500, there were many Rуcckиe SKS-s in the $450 - $600 range. None that I saw were Tyla pieces, nor did they have all matching serials. That puts your gun into the $600-$750 range. Keep a very close eye on the market of SKS models. They sold like crazy until they ran out, then trash-pieces started selling high. Your piece will push $858-900 by Feb next year. Be patient. BTW, IIRC, all bayonets on the SKS are repros, and won't take a knife-edge. AKs WILL take an edge, and can kill you!
 
Well, the Tula has gone to a new home that will have the time to appreciate it more. I traded it for an all Colt AR-15 upper with a 1:12 twist for my .22 conversion to live in. I'm happy with the trade, and so's the other guy so I can't complain even though when I got home from trading it this morning I had an email box full of cash offers :rolleyes:

Go figure, right?

The installed upper is the one I got today (perfect bore, just needs a re-finish and it could be mistaken for new.)
