A friend, Justin, turned 22 yesterday. We had been teasing him all day, saying "the three of us [three of his friends] bought you a present, we all chipped in".

He couldn't even fathom what it was.

He's been to the range a few times with us, greatly enjoying fairly much anything we handed him. He knows basic gun safety, function, etc. He's a fast learner (faster than I learned, anyway!) and is usually eager to learn just about anything.

His excitement turned to thinly-veiled disappointment when he was handed the first gift, however.

"Shotgun shells? Thank... you. Why do I need shotgun shells?"

We let his mind turn that one over for a few seconds while I quickly ran outside and grabbed the rest of his gift - a brand new Remington 870 Home Defense model. :D

"You bought me a SHOTGUN! WOW!"

Now he was excited, he quickly put the box down (after nearly tearing it from my hands) and took it out. Keep in mind - excited, relatively new to guns, only has basic training from myself and two other gun enthusiasts.

And his finger isn't on the trigger. We're proud.

I'll be taking him to the range on Friday to get plenty of trigger time in with this, though I may well be bringing a shoulder recoil pad (PAST?) for him, as he's still new to shotguns.

He was all too happy to have received buckshot as a first gift, afterall. I love a happy ending. :D

Now that's cool! My high school buddies and I did that too, 20 years ago, but it was a Smith 66 for a friend with no cash.
Well done, good frineds like you are hard to find.

Excellent! Way to go.

Please, please, don't shoot the buck first thing. Start out with something light, perhaps #8 at ten yards. You can always go up in power once familiarity and skill build. Perhaps 7 1/2 next, then stout #6.

Then you're about ready for the buck. Please try the others first, and there's no need to do it the first day at the range.

Good on ya.

John

The buckshot is REDUCED RECOIL. We thought ahead. We'll be starting on #8 target loads.

Thanks, you improved a good day.

If South Park is any place close to Central MD, I'll sweeten the pot with a session of Shotgun 101, Live.

South Park is in Colorado, actually.... I'll try to teach him my very best, but I'm still learning new things about shotguns all the time. :)

Again, way to go, PTK. If I had an extra $500, we'd be talking about that upper right now...

John

Very nice, I've gifted guns before to friends and ex friends:( never a shotgun though unless you count an ex friend that never paid me for a shotgun I sold to him!

PTK, let him shoot your SBS's maybe he will make his 18" bbl a 14" bbl SBS after that experience!

PTK,

Good on you! You taught a man how to shoot, showed him how much fun it is, AND got him his first firearm. You sir, are a good man.

Just picked up 100 Winchester AA "50% recoil, super reduced load" 12ga shells for Friday. That should make getting the fundamentals down even easier than what I had planned (light target loads)

Correction, I also gave a 12ga Savage 67 with a polychoke to another "ex friend", maybe I should stop giving shotguns away i have bad luck with that!
