I've hunted or thought about hunting pretty much for the last twenty days. I spent 7 days elk hunting int the high country and pretty much the rest hunting deer out here in the plains.

My buddy shot this rag bull on the second day of elk season. We rode in on horses and put the sneak on a group of elk with this bull in it. My buddy Tim popped him with his .375H&H dropping him with a neck shot. 270gr X bullet at around 140 yards.

On the first day of deer season my buddy Ashley and I pushed this nice little 3X3 out of a draw and went into bad hair day mode. Shooting 4 times at him at a starting distance of 50 yards or so we managed to miss him clean except for one graze mark across the hind quater. As they say sometimes stuff happens. In anycase he ran down the draw where my other buddy was blocking and recived a .270 cal 140gr trophy bonded in the noggin at 267 yards. Some days a chicken some days a feather.;)

And finally I hunted deer every day all day on some days and around my work schedule on others and finally got a chance at this pretty 4X4 as he was sneaking onto a hay field just at dark. I dropped him with one shot at about 85 yards. I was using my kimber 84M Motana in .308 firing a 180gr Nosler Partition. He was quartering away doing the classic "last look" mule deer pose. The bullet took him just forward of the right hip and stopped in the skin just behind the left shoulder. A very pretty perfectly mushroomed bullet. Not the biggest buck in Colorado but a nice last afternooner if I may say so.

Very nice. Thanks for the pictures. I'd like to get out west some time and this just makes me want it even more!

Steve,

Don't wait just come on out and do some hunting. You ain't getting any younger you know...;)

Colorado has some very good public land hunting for both deer and elk. I hunt public land primarily and you can buy elk tags over the counter.

Come on out.....

I'd like to get out there within the next 2 years. If you can give me some suggestions as to where, I'd appreciate it. I don't want to wander around like an idiot.

When you get ready to come out drop me an E-mail and I'll give you a few ideas.

Hunting out west

Steve,
You may want to look at it soon.I recieved an E-mail from D.O.W. yesterday with the slate for the next 5 years and they are looking at reducing the cost of non-res. license for that period. The hunting has been good the last few years even with the ongoing dry spell. I hope they bring back the point restrictions for bucks as I think it has helped mature more bucks. I had a good year, bagging a ragg horn bull, and a small buck. Lots of good eats around here this year! The best part was I could get horses right up to both, which makes it a lot more enjoyable to pack them out! S.R.

The second picture???

Is he CCW'ing in his hat??? ;)

In all seriousness, those are some pretty animals. Very nice head shot by your buddy!!!!was it still running when he tagged it in the head? nice DRT shot!

Congratulations to you and your friends on a successful hunt, H&HHunter! I'm verdant with jealousy. :D <---[this color]

That buck's a beaut that you popped with the Kimber. Got a pic of the bullet?

While I know that the elk wouldn't threaten any records, I'm quite frankly utterly jealous of that bull. I've hunted two elk seasons in CO without firing a shot, and I would take just about any elk I could, nowdays. (helps that I love elk venison.) Please send this flatlander's congratulations to Tim.

Nice save on the buck with the headshot from the .270.

Then we get to your buck, which looks like a monster, from here. Being a little modest, H&H? Those antlers are well outside the eartips on that muley. ;)

I played catch and release on the biggest deer I've ever seen in my life in CO near Pagosa Springs one morning. Thought it was a noisy hunter coming down the side of the mountain through the crackling re-frozen snow. "Crash! Crunch, Crackle! Crunch!" I thought that hunter was likely going to chase away all game for 5 miles, when into the clearing walks a giant buck. Do I have a deer tag in my pocket? Nooooooo! I'm a Texan, and Texas has plenty of deer, right? Why would I want to buy a deer tag in Colorado?!? (besides, I was poor, and out of state tags were $250 ea.) So there I sit, eyes stinging with ironic tears as I realize that I've got tags for 5 deer (in Texas) and one bull elk (in Colorado), but can't shoot this fine specimen that is now 60... no 40... yards in front of me. I unloaded the No 5 SMLE of the 180 .303 handload I had in the chanber, double-checked it was empty, and took a nice broadside sight picture on the left shoulder of the buck. "Click!" My buck, now. It stopped, looking in my direction curiously. I pulled the rear of the bolt to re-cock it, took another sight picture, and "Click!" I owned that buck again. It decided that it was time to leave, and took off down the mountain again with all the stealth of a D5 'dozer.

Damn, I'd love to go find that buck again, properly equipped with a local tag.

The thing about hunting up there-- you can have a successful hunt, and never fire a shot. :)

Matt,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been down in NM doing some hunting. That of mine Muley is a very nice deer and thank you for noticing. But we've got some absolute monsters out here. I wouldn't have shot my deer during the rut as he is only about 3 years old.

Just to give you an idea of the genetics in this unit:

This deer was killed last year not 500 yards from where I killed my deer. And we've killed deer in of this caliber or better every year in this unit. My deer nets around 165" this deer was right at 195". Now don't get me wrong I am not a B&C must have score guy. I enjoy every minute out in the field, little deer , big deer or no deer. I'm just trying to give you an idea of some of the monsters we have lurking about out here.

PS

I'll get a picture of that nosler PT posted tommorrow.

Lookin' good.

I haven't seen my bull yet. If I don't by next week, I'll pop a cow.
I am headed to the Big Hole again Friday to look for that big 6x6.

Nosler PT recovered from a Mule deer at approx 80 yds.

Notice that the nose is blown off the shank is in perfect condition. This is why I think the NoslerPT is a great light critter bullet but not a great heavy game bullet. 118Gr's Original weight was 180grs.

Dang, that's pretty darned good performance, though, you have to admit. Okay, it didn't retain the forward weight, but it retained every speck of jacket and rearward weight. 118g is a tad heavier than the .257 Roberts bullets that I last loaded to a very similar velocity, which I would have ZERO problem using to down that nice venado. Okay, okay-- their sectional density would be better than that rear half of that Partition, but it's a similar comparison. You're way ahead of the game with that load. :)

Thanks for the pics!

Matt,

Please don't get me wrong. The Nosler PT is a great North American game bullet and I use them for everything that I hunt here in Nortn America. When I say I don't like them for heavy game I am refereing to Cape Buffalo, elephants, hippos and such.

I have had Nosler PT's come completely uncorked on hogs as in sheading the front and rear core. However i did recover those "uncorked" bullets from a dead hog so "es laveta". ;)

I like Noslers for most applications as they are a great performer in their range of intended use.

Are there better choices? I have always done well with Noslers, but I have heard some others complaining about them. What do you think of some of the newer bullets, like the Accubond or the Interbond?

Steve,

The Nosler PT is pretty hard to beat on soft critters! Without wanting to start a range war. MY OPINON of the accubond and interbond is thus. GREAT varmint bullets but I've now seen two interbonds completely fail to penetrate on elk. I recovered an accubond on a bull that was shot in the shoulder with a .338 Ultramag (Obviously not mine I don't shoot them tourist guns ;) ) In any case it was a 225gr bullet the shot was from approximatley 200yards the bullet penetrated less than 8" and was recoverd at a nominal weight of 138grs. All of the polomar tipped bullets are poor penetraters PERIOD they just open up to flat and to fast to drive deep.

So in a nut shell I DON'T like accubonds and I don't use accubonds or interbonds. This is MY OPINON you are welcome to your's.

So looking for a better bullet than the Nosler PT there is one clear choice. Barnes x is the king. Trophy bonded is also pretty darn royal and I really like Speer grand Slams as well. Some other heavy contenders are Rhino solid shanks and North fork bullets, Alaska bullet works and I'm sure many others these are just the ones I've used and liked.

I truly am a Barnes fan. When I have serious work to do and I can't afford bullet failure as my life may count on it I shoot Barnes X and Barnes solids. they just are that reliable. Not to mention in the they have unreal Balistic coefcient.

They are a pain in the butt to clean up after as they copper foul like a big dog and that is the reasonIi don't shoot them all the time for everything.

Uggh, now I have to get rid of my .338 winmag. I don't want anyone thinking I am a tourist. ;)

Steve,

The .338 win mag is a workingmans rifle..

The .338 ultramag is gimmic AKA (A tourist rifle.)

Great thread with a lot of good information. H&Hhunter, Thanks for sharing the pics and experiences. I have always wanted to hunt out West. Hunting Elk is one of my lifetime goals. I appreciate the information.

BTW I really like your signature line.
