In the Market for a new 22LR Rifle. I'm looking to spend no more then$300.00. I will not consider the Ruger 10/22! I'm looking at a Catalog and found a couple that appeal. The Remington M5 BA & the Charles Daly Superior ll. Any other suggestions?

From personal experience I say stay away from the Remington 597. Had one. Jammo-matic. Tried 8 types of ammo. Some did slightly better than others, but not once in about 300 rounds did it EVER manage to fire all 10 rounds from the mag without some type of problem. Took it apart, cleaned, adjusted. No diff. FTF, FTE, double feed, etc. Junk. :cuss:

Got rid of it and bought a Marlin 925 in .22lr. Very nice and accurate rifle.

This Marlin out of the box was hitting 12 gauge shotgun shells @ 50 yards after just 10 minutes worth of sighting adjustment.

CZ if you can find one or the Tula.
How about a Marlin model 60? I hear they're very accurate. I had one years ago that would jam when it got hot but I haven't heard anyone else complaining about them. And, they're quite affordable.

I really like the Marlin 7000......

18" heavy target barrel....

My friend has a Marlin 7000, very nice gun and reliable. That or a Marlin 60 would be my choice.

Marlin Model 60 can be had at many pawnshops for $50-60 all over Texas, or $100 new (though I prefer the older ones with fewer plastic parts). Great little rifles for rock-bottom prices. I prefer the tube-fed Marlins to the detach-mag, but that's personal pref.

If bolt, CZ452 has rave reviews all over THR, and many small upgrades available for trigger and sights.

Lambo;

Another big + for the CZ452. Do the ammo testing & it will reward you with one helluva shooter.

I really like the Savage Mark II's. I owned a LV model and now own an FV model with Accutrigger. And the Mark II line has a variety to choose from.
I would like to try the Savage Mark 1-FVT with peep sights and Accutrigger. It sells for around the $300 area.

any new cz, or two used marlins. marlin, because they are known accurate, they have plentiful mags, they are cheaper mags, their service dept is very good.
Most of the guys over at Rimfirecentral know , that statistically speaking, chances are, Marlins will outshoot most all other brands right out of the box, unless you go high end or very expensive. Cz is one of THE most accurate you will get, yet their fit and finish is beautiful, and you won't break you wallet getting one.

If I was in the market for another .22 and if I had a $200 I would atleast consider this:

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
IN THIS CASE, THE GRAPHIC ABOVE DOES NOT DO THIS RIFLE JUSTICE. COMMERCIALLY BRAND NEW. ............$149.95

CZ452 is a wonderful gun, and a great value.

New Savage rimfire with Accu-Trigger (now available on brand-new guns only) is the best deal for a great bolt action. Not as pretty looking as the CZ, but that trigger is amazing.

Remington 5 and Charles Daly are same action AFAIK, Zastava, with a Remington stock on the Remmie.

Ruger and US-made Remington bolties are great, but expensive.

Remington 597 wasn't ready for prime time when released. Word is that the new ones feed fine. They've changed the magazine completely, and perhaps some other parts. Bad decision on their part to sell it too soon. They seem to be a lot slower to introduce new guns, lately.

Browning semiautos are neat, though expensive.

Other higher-end guns that are worth getting if you can find them in your price range, probably used in good condition:

Lever/pump:
Henry Octagon or Golden Boy (skip the lowest-end version with plastic parts)
Marlin 39
Browning BL-22
Remington Fieldmaster (pump)

Semiauto:
Browning SA22
Remington Speedmaster

AaronrKelly,
Isn't that the same rifle that Remington is hawking as the Wildcat or some such:confused: ??? I like the way it looks with its Mosin-Nagant trigger gaurd/mag. well. I want one but I just got a new to me shooters grade Yugo SKS 59-66..... and another .22 rifle (Springfield 120A). And oh yeah one still in layaway:banghead: :D .

+1 for the Marlin 60. If your vision is like mine, you can use the money saved on a good scope. that way you can see your target at 100 yards.

Word may be the new ones feed fine, but the word is not accurate. Be advised that my 597 was new production and came with the latest revision of the magazine (a 10 inside a circle on the side). It did not work as it should have.

Now it's true some are singing the 597 praises, but it's a crap shoot whether you'll get a good one or a lemon.

Buyer beware.

Well it's probably more than $300.00, but this is one of the best I've ever shot. Maybe you can find a used one. (ignore the Ruger box. You said you wouldn't consider the 10/22 so I won't recomend it.)
