I ordered some WW296 and was told by my dealer that Winchester had stoped making it and that he could not get any any more. nyone know anything about this?
I bought some H110, which he said was the same thing as the WW296, and according to the hogdon manual it is at least the same powder charge (24grs) and listed as a powder for magnum cartridges. Do any of you load H110 for your 44mag?

H-110 & WW-296

Same stuff as documented by Hodgdons Powder, somewhere online.
same warnings, don't reduce loads from recommended and use mag primers.
Best!

Yes, W-296 and H-110 are the same, also W-231 and HP-38 are the same powders, just different labels. I have not heard anything about Winchester dropping W-296 and I find it hard to believe that they would drop their only slow burning pistol powder.

DE44Mag,
I was told by Phil Hodgdon that H110 and WW296 are the same powder and that the data is intercahngable. The differences in load data (like in the Speer manuals) is due to variations in lots. I always start with the lowest minimum charge and work up from that to find accuracy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, PaulS. I'm glad you heard it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I have been saying that for around 4 years and people kept telling me they were different - real close, but different. They are both made by Primex and one batch is shipped to Hodgdon and one to Winchester. Same process, same chemicals.

I use H110 for the .44mag (Ruger Super Redhawk).

Despite what people say, I personally don't think 296 and 110 are the same. And I have 296 on hand.

I used both working up loads in the .44 and always got better results with 110. 296 does not have the same odor (unburnt) as does the 110, atleast to my nose. So in my humble opinion, I think they are different.

same stuff

296 and h110 are the same.
I have been using wc820 surplus powder from jeff at gibrass with fantastic results.
$80 delivered for 8 pounds, buying 4 kegs lowers your price to $70 per keg.

Both H110 and Win 296 are made by Saint Mark's powder and distributed in bulk form under one product number. The only difference is the container that a person at the store buys it in.

BUT BUT BUT

Maybe in the eighties H110 was W295.

Just me: I've NEVER been successful with direct comparisons of these two powders. Every lot seems (significantly) different from its presumed 'twin brother', yet lot to lot variations of W296 seem (read that: "test") smaller.

I prefer W296 in anything bigger than 357 Magnum.

Oh I'm so (not) confused :banghead:

It's my understanding that the Winchester and Hodgdon powders have slightly different deterrent coatings.

Essentially, they are the same powder, but with different deterrent coatings, they are not the same powder.

As for Winchester not making 296 any more?

I'd be shocked if they weren't. It's one of their best selling powder.

296 is still listed on the Winchester website, so I can only assume that they're still making it.

Perhaps it is a case of the local gunshop has a better mark up on Hodgdon powders, so they push Hodgdon and try not to carry Winchester.

In a conversation (some years ago) with a tech at Winchester, I was told that the powders were identical. Indeed he said that they went, direct from the manufacturing equipment, either into Winchester-marked containers or into Hodgdon-marked trucks. Same stuff, one source.

We shared a good chuckle about the (sometimes) substantial differences in published loading data for WW296 and H110.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just received an email from Winchester, they say that WW296 is still avalable.

I have used W296 a lot in the past, with good results, but check out Hodgdon Lil'Gun - it is very impressive stuff.
