Not to worry. It's just a symptom of "turrets" syndrome. :neener:

Let the puns begin!

Heh, if the SHTF, that village has an operational tank, with 118 shells and multiple machine guns, its going to be thanking the guys who pulled it out

I absolutely do believe it started up. I saw it was a T-34, and I was going to joke, "Prime it and crank it, it will go."

The T-34 was one of the war implements made to always run, period, no excuses. Modern armored vehicle designers could learn a few things from it.

Good armor, very good gun, a fair engine but gas and oil burner, No crew comfort consideration. Poor to no ventilation system. after a long road trip the crew was almost helpless with fatigue. 95 percent of the radios did not work. The company commander had to stand in the turret and give hand signals. The driver had very limited view. He could see absolutely nothing to his sides only straight ahead. The kill ratio was about 30 to one in favor of the Germans { but the Russians could replace the 30 lost.} The Germans liked to use captured T 34s in static defence, dug in on line. but desperate for any equipment they also used them in maneuver. Yes, per haps the " Glock" of tanks:)

Of course, a modern tank has electronics, stabilized gun systems, etc

and a modern tank can easily destroy an whole army of these T34s and drive for the same distances at the speeds the T34 is capable of. Only problem with modern tanks is complexity, fuel consumption and the increased weight obliterates their running gear at high speed.

Duke of Doubt:

They'd never win a battle if they had to; they be too "tanked-up". They'd never be able to keep "on-track".

Gotta luv Soviet Arms

They couldn't build a decent car, washing machine or TV. But damn! Their tanks, AK's, Maks were the arms worlds version or the Energizer Bunny and idiot
(Soviet peasant) proof too.

I have two of the above three samples of Soviet weapons, although you can probably figure out which two. :scrutiny:

The platform that the turret crew rode on was fixed to the hull, not to the turret. When the turret was slewed off center, the gunner had to do contortions to service the 76mm. In other tanks, when the turret rotated, so did the turret crew.

Also, the transmission was MASSIVELY prone to breakage. I read that they would routinely deploy with a complete spare transmission chained onto the rear deck.

Awesome old tank. T34s contributed a great deal to the defeat of Germany. Even if they were USSR they did there job and its great to see one recovered. I remember seeing this story a while back, but its still cool.

On the T34 it had its faults, but it was the best tank of its day. Cheaper than the Germans over engineered (for the time) tigers, and better able to take hits than our Shermans. Ya it had its faults but I have seen pictures from the first gulf war of destroyed T34s, which means Iraq was still using them. Ill bet most modern tanks cant beat that track record.

BTW: some south American counties are still driving Sherman around according to Jane's defense. They dont make em like they used to.

And yes I realize that the T34 cant hold a candle against the M1, but for its day it was the M1 of the USSR.
