For anyone that has shot handloads out of their XD-S .45 - is there an appreciable recoil difference between the 230gr loads and the 180's? Including cast loads.

Shooting factory 230gr loads seemed to have quite a noise, blast, and recoil when I shot it at the range. This was a while ago, and since they had the large grip on it (instead of the smaller grip) I don't think I was able to get a good purchase on it or take care of recoil correctly.

*MY* 230gr handloads shoot very softly out of the XD-S 3.3" .45. 5.0gr of W231 under a cast 230gr LSWC.

Self Defense ammo, the 185gr loads I shot (a variety) seemed a lot snappier and the 200gr Hornady XTP is very manageable.

I hope more people with experience with the XDS .45 post, because I am very interested in this gun and want to know if anyone finds recoil is a problem.

The xds was my first 45. I think it's pretty mild compared to most 40's I have shot. I am strictly into 9mm's so that was my benchmark. It handles quite well. You will feel more recoil then a 9 but that is to be expected. I expected it to be worse then it was. It's now my carry piece a lot of the time.

Thanks, good to know. Recoil is subjective; when I got my Colt Commander a couple of buddies with 1911 experience warned me the recoil would be anywhere from bad to terrible. I have smallish hands and was a little concerned about control. I was surprised when it wasn't unpleasant at all, even when I shot over 300 rounds in a single day during a weekend course.

I've shot both the 185gr and 230gr 45 Super ammo from underwood out of the xds and found recoil to be easily manageable but YMMV

Tho not for the faint of heart.

I've only shot 50 rds of 230gr through mine but recoil was ok, even with my little finger hanging off. Now I have extensions on the 5rd mags and just got 2 7rd mags so I think recoil will be a lot more managible since I have my whole hand on the gun. I don't think 45acp has that much recoil normally but it is a little more on a gun this small.

I shot 100 rounds out of my XDs today. They were 200 gr FMJ reloads that I loaded for practice. I've shot full power 230, 200, & 185 gr reloads out of mine and I've never thought it had a lot of recoil. Some people complain about the grip surface chewing up their hands, but I've never experienced any discomfort there either.

When I got my XDs back from the recall, the trigger was horrible. After disassembly and tweaking I got the trigger weight from 9lbs 12 oz, down to an average of 6 lb 4oz. It is also a lot smoother now too. My XDs was my carry gun before the recall, but after it, I switched back to my PF9. Another couple of boxes of ammo, and I'll feel good enough about the XDs to carry it again. :D

Not in that gun or with handloads, but IME 185s have less muzzle flip but a little more "snap" instead of the usual "push" of the 230s. The difference is not great, but it is there.

In my XDs i have shot 185 Gold-dots and various 230 brands and i can't tell much difference.
